Like her cousin Kal-El/Superman, Kara Zor-El is one of the few survivors of the destruction of Krypton, an origin story that will have a big impact on the plot of this summer’s Supergirl film. Kara has her own history with Kryptonian society that is far different from Superman’s, having grown into a young woman before the planet was destroyed, and those differences will be key for her journey in the movie.

“We do really thoroughly investigate Argo [the city where Supergirl was born] and Krypton,” Supergirl director Craig Gillespie tells EW. “It’s so fundamental to who she is as a person and what she goes through in her formative years there. It makes you understand why she is where she is with her personality and the self-destructive nature that she has as we meet her at the beginning of the film.”

“Trying to build on what her status was on Krypton,” he continues. “Her father being a scientist and in academia and the connections that they had there, which made it interesting in terms of how opulent that world was.”

Supergirl debuted in the new DC Universe in a memorable cameo at the end of Superman, arriving hungover in his Fortress of Solitude, oozing party girl atmosphere. That vibe will continue into her movie, though she’ll have to face some sobering enemies in her quest to help a young girl get retribution for her family who were killed by an alien tyrant.

Supergirl hits theaters on June 26. For more, check out our guide to all the upcoming DC movies and shows that are currently in the works.
