Jennifer Lawrence Is Already Ready to Quit Instagram

It sort of feels like everyone — that is, everyone who is famous — who is meant to be on Instagram or some form of social media is already on there, if not long gone. There are some of us who remember when Emma Stone had a Twitter account! All of which to say is that it’s kind of a big deal when someone like Jennifer Lawrence joins Instagram after many years of holding out on the platform. Her account @jlaw (because, as her bio says, “jenniferlawrence was taken”) shot to over 1 million followers before noon.

“So yeah, I’m giving it a shot,” she says in a to-camera inaugural video before warning, “but if anyone says anything negative, I will quit immediately, no questions asked. If anyone thinks something mean, um, I’ll know, and I’ll quit.” As if that weren’t threatening enough, Lawrence also posted a text-only Instagram Story that reads, “Please be mindful that any mean or aggressive comments can negatively affect the baby. It’s me. I’m the baby.” This is a pretty ingenious strategy, for what it’s worth. Most people join Instagram and say something like, “Hi, I’m on Instagram.” By setting boundaries immediately, Lawrence is laying down the law, though who knows if she’s manage to stick with it. That said, joining and quitting Instagram within the span of, say, a week would be pretty iconic. Though it’s possible that Lawrence joined Instagram in an act of pure spontaneous desire for attention (who among us), there is something that feels … interesting about the timing of this and a recent Vogue profile of the actor. Big announcement coming soon? An early kick-off to her awards campaign for the Martin Scorsese movie she’s in? Miss Piggy? A skin-care line? (She is following the Kardashians, after all.) Either way, she’s already cemented herself as a legacy poster.
