Pick your poison

I’m loving writing about all these retro releases coming to the PS5, which are getting more and more interesting by the week.
This time, on 13th August, we have a PS1 game from Console Archives I’ve personally wanted for an eternity: the all-girl fighter Touki Denshou Angel Eyes.
Developed by Tecmo, this fighter first launched in arcades back in 1996, but an expanded PS1 re-release deployed in Japan in late 1997.
The console version adds in story content for each of the foray’s female characters, which aren’t included in the arcade ROM.
So, while you have been able to purchase a version of this game on the PS4 for some years now, this is the first time the home release has been available outside of Japan.
Why is it special? Well, because one the game’s combatants battles with a stuffed bear, of course.
The roster also includes a biker and a volleyball star, the latter of which may be interested in Hamster’s Arcade Archives offering of the week.
That’s Technos’ 1998 effort V’Ball, also known as US Championship V’Ball in the US. (Or even Super Spike V’Ball in Europe on the NES.)
Both the American and Japanese ROMs will be included in one bundle here, but while the former does feature more players, the latter has a narrative depicting so-called “beach bums” George and Michael. (Surely a reference to the Wham singer?)
What’s neat is how, while competing for $250k as part of the plot, you’ll see George and Michael visit a car dealership after each win, looking at an increasingly expensive vehicle.
It also just happens to be a fun arcade game and thus well worth a look.
Touki Denshou Angel Eyes will cost $11.99 while V’Ball will sell for $9.99. Neither’s going to break the bank, then – but I’ve been spending quite handsomely on these games of late, so it does add up.
