Islam Makhachev makes a promise to Ian Machado Garry’s son after failed meeting left him in tears

Islam Makhachev has no plans to deny the wish of his opponent’s son.

Ian Machado Garry’s family have traveled with him to Philadelphia, which will be the location for his very first UFC title shot.

After wins over Carlos Prates and Belal Muhammad in 2025, Garry will challenge Makhachev at UFC 330, as he looks to make the Dagestani’s welterweight reign a short one.

Unlike when their fellow countrymen, Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor, collided eight years ago, there is no bad blood between Saturday’s headliners. In fact, the champ plans to make a classy gesture for his challenger’s child.

Islam Makhachev reacts after Ian Machado Garry’s son cries about not meeting him

Makhachev faced off with Garry for the first time in fight week on Tuesday. While the Dagestani had his entourage with him, ‘The Future’ was accompanied by his wife, Layla Anna-Lee, and their son.

Behind the scenes footage was captured by Will Harris for his Anatomy of a Fighter series on YouTube, including the reaction of Garry’s son to missing out on meeting the welterweight champion.

Garry’s child is clearly a big fan of his father’s upcoming opponent and even cried at being unable to greet him after the face-off.

Makhachev was asked about that by Mike Bohn during his media day appearance on Wednesday, and the UFC 330 headliner had a classy response.

“Yeah, sure. We will meet him,” Makhachev said.

“I didn’t see him there, but I’ll make him happy.”

For now, Makhachev will be focused on making sure he has his hand raised on fight night in Philadelphia.

A victory over Garry would add a successful title defense in a second division to the Dagestani’s résumé, and it will also see him surpass Anderson Silva’s record tally of 16 for the most consecutive UFC wins.

Maybe then, Makhachev will grant the wish of his challenger’s son.
