Efforts to bring Formula 1 back to India have taken a significant step forward.

Sports minister Mansukh Mandaviya has announced that a dedicated task force will be established to assess the challenges and benefits of hosting major motorsport events in the country.

The move follows a recent meeting involving Formula 1 officials, Buddh International Circuit representatives, the Adani Group, the Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India (FMSCI), and other stakeholders.

“The ministry will constitute a dedicated four-five member task force to undertake a detailed assessment of the motorsports ecosystem in the country,” Mandaviya said.

The panel will have three months to deliver its recommendations and will examine the economic, tourism and investment benefits of hosting international events.

Mandaviya said the government’s target is now to bring Formula 1 back to India by 2028. That marks a slight revision from his earlier ambition of securing a race by 2027.

Formula 1 last raced at the Buddh International Circuit near New Delhi between 2011 and 2013.

Meanwhile, FMSCI president Arindam Ghosh indicated discussions remain active, although he suggested a slightly longer timeline.

“Efforts are on to bring Formula 1 back to India by 2030,” he said.

The federation is also pushing for the return of MotoGP and a round of the World Rally Championship by 2028.
