Callum Walsh overcomes knockdown to beat Tyler Denny in front of Dana White as Zuffa Boxing comes to Dublin

Callum Walsh was put down in the first round by Tyler Denny before rallying to win on the cards as he made his Irish homecoming at the 3Arena tonight.

Cork native Walsh moved to America during the coronavirus and now lives in California with his partner; UFC star Tabatha Ricci. He has remained true to his Irish roots throughout his career, though, and tonight managed to bring Dana White’s new promotion to his nation’s capital.

Walsh has been afforded a number of big opportunities by White over the years since they started working together on a sponsorship basis. He headlined the inaugural Zuffa Boxing show at the Meta Apex and served as co-main event for Canelo Alvarez vs Terence Crawford last year.

The broadcast claimed an attendance of 14,000 at the 3Arena, which has a standing capacity of 13,000 for concerts. In fact, there were large sections of the venue covered by a craftily-placed curtain that lowered the capacity into the region of 4-5,000.

In the first round after a swarm of punches from Tyler Denny, Callum Walsh’s glove touched the canvas and he had a knockdown scored on him for the second time in his career. He was down again through a slip in the second, but rallied with an overhand left that sent Denny down hard.

Things cooled down considerably in the third as both men found their feet before round four, which was relatively tame until the final seconds as the pair went hell for leather. From there, Walsh took control of proceedings, but Denny refused to take a backward step.

The pair battled it out until the final bell which took them to the scorecards with a 10-8 round apiece and Walsh sporting a nasty cut over his eye. Ultimately, the judges scored it in favor of Walsh who earned the nod with scores of 98-91 on two and 96-90 on the other.

He had promised a knockout that would lead to a 3Arena beer shower, which ultimately didn’t quite deliver in the night’s co-feature. The Cork native then left the ring to share a moment with White at ringside.
