IOWA CITY, Iowa — Authorities urged people to avoid the area of College and Clinton streets early Sunday after reports of gunshots near the University of Iowa campus.

Videos posted to social media show a fight in the street that escalated to shots fired.

The university issued a Hawk Alert at 1:51 a.m. warning of gunfire and advising the public to stay away from the area.

First responders were on the scene by 2:03 a.m., and officials confirmed that there were victims, according to an update from the university’s emergency management website.

By 2:31 a.m., police said they were continuing to investigate and again asked people to avoid the area and remain aware of their surroundings.

A new update was issued at 3:36 a.m. saying, “ICPD continues to investigate. Remain vigilant. Report any info or suspicious activity to law enforcement 319-358-TIPS.”

Iowa City Police say, “multiple victims have been taken to area hospitals to be treated for wounds suffered in the shooting. “

In a morning statement [below] University of Iowa President Barb Wilson says three university students were injured.

No arrests have been made.

No additional details about the victims or a possible suspect were immediately released.

Gov. Reynolds issued a statement about the shooting, “This senseless act of violence has devastated the university community and our state. I have spoken with University of Iowa President Barbara Wilson and Board of Regents Chair Robert Cramer and assured them that the full resources of the state are available to assist with the investigation. The Department of Public Safety has contacted the Iowa City Police Department to offer their support.”

Meanwhile the Iowa Board of Regents sent out this message, “The safety of all the faculty, staff and students at our universities is the highest priority to the Iowa Board of Regents. We have been in touch with university officials and will work with them to provide any support they need.”

This is a developing story.
