A nationwide study of 8,515 students by the IC3 Institute reveals a steep mental health decline across Indian schools. Overall student well-being drops from 62% in Grade 8 to 43% in Grade 12, alongside sharp falls in happiness, confidence, and motivation.

According to the ‘Student Well-being Pulse Report 2026’, female students report lower levels of calmness and higher rates of frustration and sadness. Only 52% of girls report feeling confident, compared to 64% of boys.

The IC3 Institute survey found that 55% of Indian students get six hours or less of sleep per night. Researchers identified academic demands, late-night screen time, and overthinking as the primary drivers of chronic sleep deprivation.

While 52% of respondents believe therapy or counselling would help, only 6% actually consult school counsellors, according to the IC3 Institute data. Most rely on friends (49%) and family (44%), with just 2% visiting external therapists.

The report highlights that 33% of students experience anxiety due to unclear career pathways, peaking at 43% in Bihar. Nationally, only 52% of students receive structured career guidance within their schools.
