BYD regained the global lead in battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales in Q2 2026 (April–June) by selling 557,090 passenger BEVs compared to Tesla’s 480,126 deliveries. BYD’s Q2 performance was a solid sequential rebound (strong QoQ growth) after a weak start to 2026, but still slightly down YoY overall. The main forcus is overseas sales to compensate for the weakness in China and the high competition in China. BYD had operational fixes and gains on their new blade batteries and targeted product refreshes especially premium like Da Tang.

40% of BYD sales are outside of China but there was a shift back towards plug in hybrids in Q2.

China domestic EV growth has slowed. BEV and PHEV penetration continues rising and is about 60% of all China auto in 2026.

China is the world’s largest EV exporter and producer with about ~75% of global EV output.

China’s economy is at ~4.5% GDP growth for 2026 which is down from ~5% in 2025. 2027 forecasts are similar or modestly higher (~4.3–4.8%).

China has a shrinking and aging population. Overall population will be dropping at about 5 million per year by about 2030 and 10 million more will go over 60 every year.

BYD Q2 2026 totals

Total NEV wholesale sales: 1,108,048 units (+58.19% QoQ, -3.24% YoY).
Passenger BEV 557,090 units (-8.22% YoY).
Passenger PHEV 531,292 units (+2.14% YoY).
Overseas sales 471,091 units (+82.46% YoY, +46.68% QoQ).
First-half 2026 total NEV sales 1,808,511 units (-15.72% YoY), with overseas at 792,256 units (+70.65% YoY) now making up ~44% of the total.

June 2026
Total NEV wholesale 403,472 units (+5.46% YoY, +5.22% MoM) — second straight month of YoY growth after eight months of declines.
Overseas: Record 175,349 units (+94.73% YoY, ~43.5% of total sales).
Domestic (China) 228,123 units (-22.02% YoY, but +2.39% MoM).
Passenger BEV ~201k units (-2.62% YoY).
