A stretch of 19th Street that once held public housing complexes is about to look very different—and for residents of Edison-Eastlake, the wait is almost over.
The City of Phoenix is building two new parks on the former A.L. Krohn Homes and Frank Luke Homes public housing sites in Council District 8. Edison Park at 901 N. 19th St. is expanding south by roughly five acres, while a brand-new 3.5-acre Linear Park will run along the east side of 19th Street from Villa to Polk streets.
Construction is expected to run through August 2026, with a ribbon-cutting planned for fall or winter, according to the city’s project fact sheet.
What’s coming to the neighborhood
The Edison Park expansion will include a refurbished splash pad, a skate plaza, basketball courts, a multi-purpose sports field, stationary fitness equipment, a picnic ramada with grills, and a restroom.
The Linear Park will feature a healing garden with art elements, a public citrus grove, playgrounds, and picnic ramadas. Both parks will have shade trees and walking paths, and the Edison Park expansion will include enhanced lighting.
Pedestrian connections will link both parks to the Harmony at the Park Festival Streets. Both sites have been rezoned to the Walkable Urban Code.
The bigger picture
The $12 million investment is funded through City of Phoenix dollars, HUD Community Development Block Grant funds, and a $42.5 million Edison-Eastlake Choice Neighborhoods grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The City Parks and Recreation Department will maintain both parks once construction is complete.
