Net taker volume surges to $3B as buying outpaces selling for the first time

Something notable just happened in crypto derivatives markets. For the first time, net taker buy volume crossed the $3 billion threshold, meaning the volume of aggressive market buys decisively outpaced sell volume.

Taker volume is one of those metrics that sounds dry until you understand what it measures. In futures markets, a “taker” is someone who places a market order, hitting the book immediately rather than waiting for a fill. When takers are predominantly buying, it signals urgency.

What the numbers actually say

On Binance, Bitcoin’s average taker buy volume was running at approximately $3.3 billion as of mid-August 2026. Then, on August 19, an hourly spike pushed the figure to around $4 billion, coinciding with Bitcoin breaking above $68,000.

Ethereum did not sit this one out. ETH’s taker buy volume peaked at $2.55 billion on the same date, the third-highest reading in six months.

Net taker volume averaged $20 million per hour over a four-week high period through mid-August.

CryptoQuant analyst Maartunn flagged the data, noting the milestone where buy volumes crossed above sell volumes. The significance is less about the absolute number and more about what the crossing represents: a structural shift in how traders are positioning, not just a one-day spike.

Why history makes this interesting

CryptoQuant’s historical data shows that similar spikes in aggressive net buying preceded significant market turning points in 2020, 2022, and early 2023.

In 2020, aggressive taker buying preceded a sustained upward move. In 2022, a spike appeared near a local top before a sharp correction. In early 2023, the metric surged ahead of Bitcoin’s recovery rally from the post-FTX lows.

Reading between the lines

For derivatives traders specifically, funding rates and open interest will tell the next part of the story. If net taker buying remains elevated and open interest grows alongside it, the position is building. If taker volume fades while price holds, that suggests organic spot buying is taking over. If both volume and price fade together, the spike was noise.
