Iran claims IRGC Navy captures US unmanned submersible near Strait of Hormuz, calls it ‘war trophy’

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy claimed it captured a US unmanned submersible near the entrance of the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday.

The IRGC said the vessel was intercepted during a complex intelligence and operational operation.

Iranian state broadcaster IRIB described the vessel as one of the US military’s most advanced unmanned submarines.

The IRGC claimed the submersible uses the latest underwater technology and was delivered to the US fleet in 2025.

Iran’s state news agency IRNA said the vessel had been seized as a “war trophy.”

IRNA reported that photographs of the allegedly captured submersible could be released in the coming hours.

The United States has not yet commented on the IRGC’s claim.

The Trump administration imposed new sanctions on Iran’s aviation industry.

The measures target 36 entities, including more than two dozen commercial and private airlines and foreign cargo service providers.

The sanctions are part of the administration’s broader “Operation Economic Outcast” campaign.

The campaign aims to cut off “critical financial lifelines” to Iran and isolate Tehran from its remaining trading partners.

Brent crude approached $100 a barrel before paring gains after Saudi Arabia reported attacks on several energy facilities in the kingdom’s south.

Brent was trading near $99 a barrel, after rallying sharply last week on escalating Middle East tensions and stronger Chinese buying.

Saudi Arabia said the attacks on Tuesday wounded several people and forced operations at some energy facilities to halt.

Iran-backed Houthi militants claimed responsibility, saying they targeted Saudi Arabia’s 400,000-barrel-a-day Jazan refinery and other facilities.

The latest attacks add to growing concerns over disruptions to global oil supplies from both the Houthi campaign and the wider Iran war.

Global oil inventories are declining rapidly, while prices for refined fuels such as diesel are surging worldwide.

Brent crude is up more than 60% this year, while Europe’s diesel benchmark is nearing $200 a barrel.

US stocks opened lower on Tuesday as markets returned after the three-day Labor Day weekend.

The S&P 500 fell 0.2%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 477 points, or 0.9%.

The Nasdaq Composite slipped 0.1% in early trading.

Brent crude rose 0.9% to $97.85 a barrel, after briefly touching $99.46.

Oil prices have climbed from around $72 a barrel over the past two months.

Saudi Arabia launched retaliatory strikes on Yemen’s Houthis after the Iran-backed rebels carried out their heaviest attacks in years.

Houthi attacks targeted Saudi oil facilities and other sites, injuring 73 people and temporarily disrupting operations.

The Saudi strikes reportedly hit Taiz and Marib provinces in Yemen, where heavy fighting has intensified.

The escalation follows the collapse of a four-year truce in July, amid the wider US-Iran war in the Middle East.

The Houthis are seeking to expand their control towards the Bab al-Mandab Strait, a key Red Sea shipping route.

Bab al-Mandab has become more important for Saudi oil exports after Iran blockaded the Strait of Hormuz, sharply restricting Gulf energy shipments.

South Korea has sent a fact-finding team to the Strait of Hormuz to assess the security situation and conditions on the ground.

Seoul stressed that no decision has been made to deploy troops to the strategic waterway.

The team travelled to the United Arab Emirates over the weekend and is assessing operational conditions for a possible deployment.

The team is expected to return to South Korea as early as this week, according to Yonhap News Agency.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tuesday there had been “significant progress” in talks with Oman over the administration of the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

According to an Iranian foreign ministry statement, Araghchi “explained the latest status of Iran-Oman talks on the Strait of Hormuz, reporting significant progress” during a call with his Japanese counterpart.

Iran and Oman, both coastal states on the strait, have for weeks been discussing the future of navigation through the waterway, with Tehran saying progress had been made to agree a temporary shipping route, AFP reported.

Eleven people were killed and seven others injured after a fuel tanker crashed and exploded on the Sanandaj-Hamadan road in Iran’s Kordestan province on Saturday, according to newly surfaced CCTV footage.

Iran’s traffic police chief said the accident was caused by a sudden failure of the tanker’s braking system. The governor of Sanandaj declared two days of public mourning following the deadly crash.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Tuesday described the Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia as “counterproductive,” saying military action was not an acceptable way to resolve disputes.

Lavrov also warned that the escalation was hurting the global economy, stressing the need to address the situation through means other than military force.
