De’Aaron Fox’s missed layup serves as a forgettable memory for the Spurs out of their nightmare Game 4 loss in the NBA Finals.

The San Antonio Spurs will forever be haunted by the outcome of Game 4 of the 2026 NBA Finals, leading by as many as 29 points only to commit an all-time choke job and endure a 107-106 defeat out of OG Anunoby’s game-winning tip.

San Antonio Spurs / Schedule

Almost everyone sees De’Aaron Fox as the one to blame for the Spurs’ epic loss upon his final play. But the star point guard is convinced enough about the look he had and the decision he made to try to lift San Antonio.

“We haven’t scored. I tried to get a layup to get up three [points],” he explained about what went through his mind from his play late in Game 4.

“Make them force to need a three, and then OG [Anunoby] made a good block.”

Stephon Castle nailed two of his free throws, putting the Spurs up by a point with 30 seconds left, 106-105.

On the next play, Jalen Brunson missed a short jumper for the Knicks, and Fox tipped the ball on the other side of the court and earned the possession over OG Anunoby.

As he grabbed the ball, Fox soared for a layup, but he was subsequently rejected by Anunoby, which allowed the Knicks to secure the ball and eventually win the thriller.

Many have argued that Fox should have burned the clock instead and let himself get fouled by Anunoby, as he earned the Spurs the critical possession as they led by a single point.

“I just thought I’d be able to outrun [Anunoby],” Fox argued. “That’s it.”

Dropping 18 points and seven assists on the losing effort, the Spurs will look at Fox’s potential bounce-back play heading to Game 5 with their season on the line.
