2026 U.S. Open final round leaderboard, live updates: Wyndham Clark leads by 6 entering Sunday at Shinnecock Hills

The U.S. Open is Wyndham Clark’s to lose.

Clark is carrying a massive six-shot lead into the final round at Shinnecock Hills on Sunday. He posted an even-par 70 in a third round that only saw two players in the field hit red numbers. But after a dominant first two days — Clark set the 36-hole course record by getting to 7-under at the midway point of the major championship — that was more than enough.

Clark will head out in the final round alongside Scottie Scheffler, who would complete the career grand slam with the win. Scheffler, who turns 30 on Sunday, carded a 1-under 69 in the third round.

If he can hold on, Clark will claim his second major championship in his career. He won the U.S. Open for the first time back in 2023 in Los Angeles. He’s been on a roll lately, too. The 32-year-old won The CJ Cup last month for his fourth career PGA Tour win, and he’s not finished outside of the top-15 since.

A lot can happen on Sunday, especially at Shinnecock Hills. But Wyndham Clark is just 18 holes away from a win, and so far, nobody’s been able to threaten his lead even a little bit.

Rory McIlroy absolutely launched a drive at the first, and set it right up next to the green.

He then missed and chipped it over the green, and had to settle with a par. Not the ideal start for him with Wyndham Clark a full 10 strokes ahead…

The United States Golf Association is once again offering a record purse this week at the U.S. Open.

The USGA announced this week that it is putting up a $22.5 million purse, which is a $1 million increase from last season. That means that the winner of the major championship on Sunday night at Shinnecock Hills will take home a $4.5 million check.

    2026 U.S. Open payouts

    1. $4.5 million
    2. $2.43 million
    3. $1,532,530
    4. $1,074,363
    5. $894,841

With about half the field on the course, the average score so far is … 70.7, some 3-4 shots easier than Rounds 1-3. That’s mostly because there is no wind around the course right now. That is expected to change when the leaders hit the course.

Which holes are gettable so far: Holes 4, 5, 10, 16 and 17 are all playing under par right now.

There’s been a lot of talk about how empty the stands were when the leaders finished Round 3. And they were empty:

The issue is Shinnecock’s location. Not a lot of fans are staying at their estates out on Long Island. Instead, they’re taking the train out from the city — a two-hour trek each way. And so if you’re a parent with your kids, and you’re looking at the clock and it’s 6 p.m., you’re looking at an 8 p.m. arrival back at Penn Station … if you’re lucky. So instead of sticking around to see the best players come through, you’re heading back to the train station with the hope of getting home before 9 p.m.

Some of this is just location, but also … it’s on the USGA for having a 3:45 tee time. Thankfully today’s final pairing is going off more than an hour earlier, but still … it will be an after 7p.m. finish, meaning you’re not getting home before 10.

Will the stands be full when the trophy is presented?

Earlier this week, Jay Busbee wrote about Jackson Koivun, golf’s next big thing. Koivun, who after this tournament will turn pro, makes no bones about it: he wants to be No. 1 in the world. Well, after three rounds and into his fourth, he’s showing some of the talent that helped him lead Auburn to a natty …

He tacked on another after that, and he’s now -3 on his round, +4 overall, and low amateur at the moment.

Per DataGolf, Wyndham Clark has a 72% chance to win, entering today’s final round. Here’s how the list fills out:

    Clark: 72%
    Scottie: 9%
    Xander: 3%
    Theegala: 2.5%
    Burns: 2.3%

    Soooooo, they’re saying there’s a chance.

The world No. 1 turns 30 today. To celebrate, the PGA Tour put together a montage of his best shots. Enjoy.

The wind is laying down right now, though the greens are rolling even quicker than yesterday. But … the forecast calls for the wind to pick up right around the time the leaders tee off, from barely blowing to gusts of 10-15 mph.

If the forecast proves correct, it is going to make for a very interesting afternoon.

    From Jay Busbee:

What awaits Wyndham Clark on Sunday afternoon? A second U.S. Open trophy, an elevation to his generation’s best? Or one of golf’s most momentous collapses, one that will haunt him the rest of his career? It’s all waiting out there at Shinnecock, and it will all the way to the final green.

It’s a heck of an either or, and Busbee nailed it with this column.
