This is one of the weirder Things Netflix has done in order to get into the live-sports game. Wednesday’s Thing will be throwing the ceremonial first pitch for Major League Baseball’s Opening Night. Thing will be in the flesh at the Yankees-Giants game at San Francisco’s Oracle Park Wednesday night. This is not entirely unprecedented. Other nonhumans who have thrown a first pitch include Sadako from Ringu, Chewbacca, and Ronald Reagan.
Logistically, we have a few questions. Thing on Wednesday is CGI-enabled. The little sucker can roam about freely, with the actor onto whose body Thing is but one piece (Victor Dorobantu) chroma-keyed out of the shot. But they’re not going to let the 40,000-plus folks at Oracle Park watch Dorobantu do an It’s Always Sunny Green Man impression, right? So they’ll probably be walking back Thing technology to the ’60s-sitcom iteration, i.e., Guy Hiding in a Box With His Hand Sticking Out. Will someone dressed as Slurp wheel out a Taylor Swift–ian cleaning cart for Thing to sit upon? Also, very little range of motion for the person playing Thing. How will this all work? Find out when MLB Opening Night coverage starts at 7 p.m. ET on Netflix.
