“We’re definitely getting close to the final phase”

Just last week, we received the perhaps unsurprising news that 007 First Light was going to be delayed on Switch 2. Again. That ‘Summer 2026’ window has been pushed to March 2027, and in light of the new release date, developer IO Interactive has spoken about its reasoning for the rescheduling.

In a new interview with Inven Global, IO technical producer Cristina Vega clarifies that “While being delayed for a third time is certainly disappointing news for fans, this decision was also made for their benefit”. While this delay stemmed from the team needing “a brief breather” after an extended period of pushing the development, “combined with requests from marketing and various other factors” and implementing a new ‘Meshnets’ rendering system, Vega is reassuringly optimistic about the Switch 2 port as a whole:

The Switch 2 porting work is going very well. Recently, while preparing a presentation for Gamescom, we compared footage we worked on back in March with the results from this summer, and there was really so much progress.

The producer notes that getting the port running at a stable 30fps is the team’s “highest priority”. “When we first started working on it, we experimented with applying different frame rates depending on the resolution,” she continues, “We even tried seeing if we could run cinematic scenes at a different frame rate, but ultimately it didn’t work properly”.

Naturally, the team has had to make some cutbacks to get things up and running on Switch 2 — “some compromises are inevitable,” Vega tells Inven Global. However, the producer clarifies that the team “made those choices in areas that aren’t very crucial to players”. NPC and enemy numbers have stayed the same in the Switch 2 version, though the team has dropped the quality on select background assets to keep things up and running — “we chose technical solutions instead of radical compromises”.

It all makes a lot of sense, even if another delay is disappointing to all those of us wanting to go hands-on with First Light right now. We were lucky enough to see a brief slice of the game on Switch 2 at Gamescom this year, and we came away pleasantly impressed with the whole thing. Our lovely video producer, Alex Olney, even captured some gameplay of his session, which you can check out below.

Are you still excited for 007 First Light on Switch 2? Let us know in the comments.
