RPG Cast – Episode 721: “Skyrim Helmet Sleep Mask”

1. MY personal RPG golden era, as strange as this will sound, is during the GameCube era. I never owned a PS2 and while the GameCube had considerably fewer RPGs released for it, there were many memorable ones. It started with Phantasy Star Online, which was the game that made me a fan of RPGs. From there I would play and love Skies of Arcadia Legends, Pokemon Colosseum, The Legend of Zelda: The Winder Waker (I don’t consider it an RPG, but it was my first Zelda game), Tales of Symphonia, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Baten Kaitos, and Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance. All of these games were solidified my love of the genre and were formative during my teen years.

2. The SNES is the Silver Age for RPGs and the PS1 was the Golden Age. Still waiting for the Platinum Age!

3. The Golden Age for me was certainly the SNES era. There were so many great games in such a relatively short period of time. We had Final Fantasy reaching new peaks, timeless classics like Chrono Trigger, and Enix untouched by Squaresoft… *Ahem*. Although we didn’t get all the games in the West that were released in Japan, it was also the time when emulation really started to be a thing. Sites like Node99 and then Zophar’s Domain started sowing the seeds of how it was possible to play games that never got out of Japan.

   However, I’m sure the fact that I grew up during this period is my bias 🙂

4. We’re clearly still living in a golden age, one that started in the mid to late Eighties, and the best time is now when everything from the past is also available. But maybe my favourite time would be the seventh generation of handhelds, with the DS and PSP going head to head. At a stretch, you could say that also coincided with a mature PS2 and its sixth gen rivals.
