I’m still ride or die with Pokemon, as can probably be gleamed from my username, but if it counts Shin Megami Tensei is a strong runner-up.
If we’re picking our one individual favourite monster-collecting game, rather than series, then for me it’s Persona 3 Portable. “Stupid seniors, with their French…”
Shout-outs to all the later Persona and mainline SMT games, Siralim, Pokemon and, as a wildcard, Xenoblade Chronicles 2. While the gacha system for collecting blades was one of the worst things about that otherwise excellent game, it was also strangely compelling.
Monster Hunter Stories is my current favorite, but I’ll give a shout out to the old school Pokemon games. I may have fallen out of love with the mainline Pokemon series, but they still occupied a large part of my gaming life for a long time.
I really like the monster collecting in Ni no Kuni. I found it to be fun and rewarding.
