RPG Cast – Episode 544: “You Will NOT Bucket Shame Me”

2. Ah, Baroque. It has such a delightfully obtuse and mind-screwy story, I spent hours researching and writing a summary of the plot for RPGBacktrack episode on Rougelikes, and it still makes no blasted sense.

   Question of the Week: This may be an atypical one, but I was traumatized by Communion, the film based on the book by Whitley Strieber. This coupled with my Dad having a copy of the book at the time left me deeply afraid of grey aliens when I was 5 or so. A few years later, when I was 8-9, I watched and was freaked out by the aliens in Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and remembered the aliens in Communion. Then presumably due to morbid curiosity, I read books on UFO and abduction stories, which kept me up late at night, terrified I would be abducted.

   To this day, non-cartoony depictions of greys still unsettle me a little.

3. QOTW: The movie that traumatized me was a movie I didn’t even know was a movie. As an impressionable youth, I totally bought into the whole alien abduction thing. Believed it entirely. Watched every show I could that had anything to do with alien abduction. Today, however, I still believe in life on other planets, but less so the whole aliens crossing the vastness of space just to borrow people to shove stuff up their butts and noses… but I digress….
   So, when the station UPN has a special called “Alien Abduction: Incident in Lake County” I was there. What it was was a found footage movie of a family being systematically abducted on Thanksgiving in 1997 with the one son video recording the whole thing interspersed with “experts” commenting on the footage. Back then I bought it hook, line, and sinker and it instilled certain fears in me that I still suffer to this day (although to a less degree). But there was one big clue that should’ve given it away. … the end credits with the list of cast and crew playing the McPhearson family.

4. The call it Scholastic Book Fair now? Back in my day we filled out a mail-order catalog-form in the school, and got our Scholastic books weeks later.

   QoTW: Heavy Metal is the movie that traumatized me the most. Specifically the section with zombies. I think it’s even creepier as an animated movie that it would have been as a live-action movie.

   Honorable mention goes to Watership Down, the movie that will traumatize anyone of any age who likes bunny rabbits.
