TELEVISION HAS A funny way of turning perfectly good jackets into the star of the show. If you remember, we first fell in love with the Flint and Tinder flannel-lined waxed trucker worn by Pedro Pascal on The Last of Us, which quickly became as recognizable as the man wearing it. Then there was the iconic Carhartt Detroit Duck Jacket from Amazon’s ranch-centered western Outer Range. Now, there’s a new contender for the title of TV’s jacket du jour: the RRL Corduroy-Collar Cotton Deck Jacket worn by Kyle Chandler in HBO’s Lanterns. As a style editor, I’ve tested my fair share of outerwear over the years, and I can tell you there’s a big difference between a jacket that looks good on a hanger and one that actually earns a spot in your rotation. Kyle Chandler’s jacket falls firmly into the latter category.

The jacket is an RRL cotton deck jacket with a corduroy collar, and it has the kind of rugged, lived-in appeal that makes you want to throw it on with practically everything. The design pulls from early-20th-century nautical workwear, which explains why it feels both utilitarian and timeless. The cotton fabric has a textured, grosgrain appearance that gives it some character, while the corduroy shawl collar adds a little softness and contrast. A buttoned storm placket and drawstring hem round out the details without making the jacket feel overly technical.
Of course, there’s one small problem: the price. The jacket currently goes for a staggering $690, which is a lot to spend on a piece of outerwear. At that price, you’re paying for RRL’s heritage-driven design and the unmistakable Ralph Lauren aesthetic. I understand that this jacket may be a little steep for the average shopper, especially if you’re not quite ready to spend that much on a single layer. That’s why I’ve also rounded up a few more affordable alternatives that capture the same rugged, nautical-inspired look without requiring quite as much of an investment.
