The CDC has declared an outbreak caused by various types of Salmonella and traced to a number of moringa leaf powder products to be over and the FDA has closed its investigation.

As of July 22, 2026, a total of 131 people infected with one of the outbreak strains of Salmonella had been reported from 38 states. Illnesses started on dates ranging from Aug. 22, 2025, to June 14, 2026. Of 121 people with information available, 36 were hospitalized. No deaths were reported.

The implicated moringa leaf powder was imported from India. It was sold under a number of brands. A variety of products were recalled in relation to the outbreak.

Of the 84 ill people interviewed during the outbreak, 74 reported eating a product containing moringa leaf powder, including 63 who reported Live it Up Super Greens supplement powders only, five who reported Why Not Natural moringa powder capsules only, one person who reported consuming both Live it Up Super Greens supplement powder and Why Not Natural moringa powder capsules products, and five who reported TNVitamins moringa powder capsules only.

The products linked to illnesses in this outbreak have a long shelf life. The FDA is reminding consumers and retailers to not eat, sell or serve recalled products containing moringa leaf powder. Consumers should throw these products away.

As part of the investigation, the FDA and state partners from Illinois, Massachusetts, Minnesota, South Dakota and Wisconsin collected finished product and ingredient samples from sick people’s homes and firms in the supply chain. A total of 12 samples tested positive for Salmonella, and 11 samples detected at least one of the outbreak strains of Salmonella during whole genome sequencing analysis.

The FDA has increased screening of imported moringa powder from India for Salmonella.
