FDA continues investigations of several outbreaks

An outbreak of Salmonella infections has doubled in size during the past week.

The Food and Drug Administration reports that the outbreak of Salmonella Javiana infections now has 212 patients, up from 106 a week ago. The agency is not reporting the patients’ ages or where they live. A source of the pathogen has not yet been determined, but the FDA has initiated traceback and testing. The agency has not reported what food it is tracing or what it is testing.

In other outbreaks news, the FDA is investigating an outbreak of infections from Listeria monocytogenes. The patient count has increase to nine, up from eight a week ago. The FDA has not yet determined a source of the pathogen, but is has initiated testing. The agency is not reporting what it is testing. The FDA first reported the outbreak on July 22.

For an outbreak of Salmonella Oranienburg infections, the patient count has increased to 90, up from 81 a week ago. The FDA is not reporting the patients’ ages or where they live. The agency has not determined a source of the pathogen. Traceback efforts have begun, but the FDA is not saying what food is being traced. The agency first posted the outbreak on July 8.

An outbreak of infections from E. coli O157:H7 has been declared over. There were 14 patients confirmed in the outbreak. A source of the pathogen was not determined, but the FDA conducted traceback. The agency did not report what food it traced. The FDA first posted the outbreak on July 1.
