A DRESS SHOE under $200 is a fair deal. A hybrid dress shoe under $200 that actually feels comfortable all day long and is built with quality construction? Worth every penny—just take my wallet already. Okay, I’m not going to gatekeep any longer—the footwear champ I’m referencing here: The Original by Amberjack, a suede lace-up that can play well in both laid-back and formal settings. The emerging brand obsessed over the details, giving the silhouette sneaker-level support and cushioning that you rarely find in traditional dress shoes. That winning combination earned it a spot on Men’s Health’s list of the most comfortable dress shoes.

The Original

Pros

  • Made with water-repellent, Italian suede
  • Great dress shoe for the office, casual outings, and weddings
  • Sneaker-like build that feels supportive
  • Sizes range up to 15
  • Covered by 2-year warranty

Cons

  • May have to size down if you’re in between sizes

The Upper: Suede Structure

Too often, dress shoes feel so stiff, you wonder if comfort was left out of the design brief entirely. I’ve tested more styles than I count with uppers made from all kinds of material including full-grain leather, nubuck, canvas, even knit or engineered mesh. But none of them compare to a smooth suede finish with rich texture that softens the rigidity of traditional dress attire. I’m normally a slip-on loafer kind-of-guy, but this lace-up upper felt easy and comfortable right out of the box. I didn’t have to break it in. And my feet didn’t feel like they were suffocating after tying my knots.

What really sold me, though, was the versatility. Traditional leather dress shoes can feel overly formal to rock everyday, but the suede can go either way. I can get away with wearing it with a tailored suit for a summer wedding or something more chill like a tucked in button-down and jeans for the office. On the flip side of things, you have to be careful with suede. Amberjack used a water-repellent Italian suede that can bead up and roll off, but it’s not waterproof. So, in the event that the forecast calls for a full-on downpour, leave this pair at home.

The Rest of the Build: Midsole and Outsole

I’ll be honest: when brands start throwing around terms like “heat-activated insole,” my skepticism kicks in. But after several days of testing, I could tell The Original was built differently. The removable insole felt supportive without being overly squishy. My heel stayed locked in place instead of sliding forward, and my arches felt lifted the whole time I stood around on set. Not to sound dramatic, the athletic-inspired outsole added a level cushion I normally would associate with my favorite pair of Hokas. As a New York resident, that’s important for me because I walk everywhere—from my apartment to the train, across office floors, and down long city blocks. But even after logging miles on these hard streets, I never dealt with the usual foot fatigue that comes with most leather lace-ups.

The Verdict

Most dress shoes ask for a compromise. Amberjack’s The Original is one of the few pairs I’ve tested that delivers the sharp look of a traditional lace-up with a sneaker-like build that eliminates the foot fatigue that usually comes with it. If your calendar regularly bounces between the office, dinner reservations, and long city walks, I’ll say this shoe should be on your radar (or your next purchase).
