Florida Seniors Don’t Want Arcade Games to Vanish

Florida’s determined stance against alleged illegal gambling arcades, backed by an intense crackdown, has drawn opposition from an unexpected group: elder citizens. The group claims the neighborhood businesses are important social hubs and not underground casinos.

“Who Wants to Sit in Front of the TV for Eight Hours?”

Together with local law enforcement, Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier and the Florida Gaming Control Commission (FGCC) continued their statewide enforcement efforts aimed at arcades they claim operate illegal slot-style gambling machines under the guise of entertainment venues.

Authorities say the businesses violate Florida’s gaming laws, exposing consumers to unfair games. Moreover, they are frequently linked to broader criminal activity, including drug trafficking and human trafficking.

Many regular patrons, however, insist these places offer a safe place where older residents can socialize, with emphasis on those who cannot easily travel to the state’s licensed casinos.

“Who wants to sit in front of the TV for eight hours? It’s more like a little social club or community of people,” Fort Myers resident Linda Pregno told local broadcaster WINK News.

Other seniors expressed similar concerns, arguing that closing the arcades would remove one of the few affordable entertainment options available in their communities.

“Why would the state of Florida take away from the small businesses and take away from us elderly people? Most of us are not going to run out to Seminole Casino Immokalee,” another patron said.

Thousands of Illegal Machines Seized

According to the FGCC, authorities seized more than 6,700 illegal slot machines and $14.4 million last year alone. Through the first half of 2026, another 3,114 gambling machines have been removed from operation.

Officials have explained that, unlike licensed slot machines operating in Seminole casinos and South Florida racinos, machines found in illegal arcades are not subject to regulatory oversight.

According to Florida law, legal slot machines must maintain a minimum payout rate of 85%, which was not the case for some illegal machines that were configured to return as little as 10% to players, say investigators.

Protecting the Legal Gaming Industry

The enforcement campaign also protects one of Florida’s largest revenue sources.

Under the 2021 gaming compact between the State of Florida and the Seminole Tribe, the tribe agreed to provide at least $2.5 billion in revenue-sharing payments during the first five years of the agreement. Future payments are tied to slot machine revenue generated at Seminole casinos.

State officials maintain that enforcing gambling laws helps preserve the integrity of Florida’s regulated gaming industry while protecting consumers from unlicensed operators.
