Love, apparently, is a good reason to invest in armor. For spring, Yirantian’s founder Yirantian Guo explored the emotional turbulence of a woman in love: passion, independence, tenderness, vulnerability. “When women are sad, they feel powerful,” she said. A paradox of the heart, perhaps, but one with a certain logic.

Titled Rooted Grace, the collection continued Guo’s exploration of women’s inner lives, translating their emotional contradictions into clothes with a clear sense of purpose. Broad shoulders and neat, graphic shapes established a lean silhouette, while sculptural tailoring and structured corsets accentuated the waist, lending the clothes both strength and polish. The effect was assertive without becoming combative. Love may leave a few bruises, but there is no reason to dress for a full-scale siege.

The collection balanced structure with softness. Lace, one of the brand’s signatures, took on a more substantial role in intarsia on skirts and capelets, as well as in compositions with chiffon and satin. Against leather jackets and more linear tailoring, it introduced sensuality. Pleated satin details brought flashes of movement to the leather’s tougher surfaces. The interplay felt considered rather than contrived: vulnerability was allowed in, but on negotiated terms.

After 12 years of honing her style, Guo knows what sets her work apart, particularly in tailoring and outerwear. “Strength isn’t a surface effect, nor something a woman can simply put on; it comes with experience, often the uncomfortable kind,” she said. The clothes made a convincing case for dressing accordingly: a little lace, some leather, and, when necessary, a well-constructed corset.
