Writer, artist, and advocate Tallulah Willis is married! On Saturday, August 8, she and musician Justin Acee tied the knot in a ceremony in Sun Valley, Idaho—and just over a week before, in a suite at the Chateau Marmont, Vogue joined Tallulah for her final wedding dress fitting.

The morning begins with Tallulah chatting with her sisters Rumer and Scout about her wedding dress search. “Remember when you were sending me Etsy wedding dresses?” Scout jokes. “This was like six months ago. She was like ‘What about this one?’ and it was on Etsy. From Etsy to Balenciaga couture—that’s a moment. Who would have thought?”

Indeed, in a matter of months, Tallulah went from scrolling the online marketplace to having Balenciaga creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli create a custom dress just for her—one of the first bridal gowns he’s created in his post as creative director of the historic fashion house. “This morning I’m feeling almost out of body,” Tallulah admits. “I have my family here, I’m trying on this dress, being in kind of a princess moment.”

“The day after his first couture collection for Balenciaga, he was with us for four hours,” Tallulah’s mother, Demi Moore, remembers. “And I think he would have stayed there playing all day.”

In the lead-up to that moment, Tallulah worked with Demi’s longtime stylist Brad Goreski to pull inspiration and references for the Balenciaga couture team. “Being able to put together things that I like, and working together with Brad too on that, and walking in the room and seeing all of these things come to life, and then also knowing it was for me, was such a beautiful moment,” Tallulah says. “I’ll never forget that.”

“I think one of the big, important things for Tallulah was that it was whimsical and ethereal,” Brad adds. “And I think putting it through the Balenciaga lens. The couture team and Pierpaolo sent the most exquisite selection of sketches to choose from. We were blown away. It was insane.”

After talking through her references, family members urge Tallulah to get to the main event—they all went to see the dress. To that end, Tallulah steps into another room to change, and when she emerges, the group erupts in applause and plenty of “oohs” and “aahs.”

The strapless column dress is crafted from silk satin, fully backed with silk organza, and has a draped train skirt and bow in back. “[The bow] was something that Pierpaolo wanted,” Tallulah says. “He wanted it to be like a package that was being unwrapped.”

The dress took 712 hours of work, including 405 hours of construction and atelier alterations, while an additional nine hours were dedicated to the veil alone. The hand embroidery was created by artisans in the Balenciaga atelier. Each organza petal was individually beaded and then hand-applied one-by-one, requiring approximately 60 hours of work.

The strapless bodice was constructed from cotton tulle, reinforced with hand-picoted faille to provide structure, and the neckline was inspired by a Balenciaga look her mother wore to the Vanity Fair Oscar party earlier this year. “It was [a] beautiful, black, super simple sheath, but it had that really sculptural Balenciaga [neckline],” Tallulah remembers. “When I first tried on the original iteration [of my wedding dress], it was flat across [the neckline], and I just thought, wouldn’t it be so beautiful to have no necklace and nothing up here, but just the shape.”

Next comes the veil. As it’s placed over Tallulah’s head, there are comments amongst the friends and family gathered about how with the addition of this very bridal accessory, she has now transformed into a “movie star goddess.”

“The best part of the dress is the magnitude,” Tallulah says. “It’s the thing that’s getting me to my new husband. We made a decision at the very beginning of our relationship that we were going to choose each other every day. My biggest hope [for the dress] was that [it would be] something magical, but magical in a way that was unexpected, kind of like me. I’ve worked very hard to be comfortable in my own skin, to be in something that there’s a strength in is profound for me. I’ve worked so hard in my life to be able to find that beauty every day… this is definitely a very special peak celebration moment of beauty.”

Finally, French fries are brought in, and all of the sisters laugh together and continue to gush over the dress. “We’re going to have some French fries, [and] we’re going to soak and relish in the beauty and the magic,” Tallulah says. “Thank you to Balenciaga, and thank you to Pierpaolo, and thank you to everyone who has believed in me, and stayed the course!”
