Cher, Brigitte Bardot, Diana Ross, Farrah Fawcett, and Jane Birkin: When it comes to the 1970s, these were the icons in bohemian and disco circles. Both their beauty and fashion looks are still referenced today—just look at the recent collections from Chloé, Anna Sui, Dries Van Noten, and more if you need proof.
So what really is a bohemian hairstyle—and how do you find the right style for you? Below, the experts break down six hugely popular current hairstyles that have their roots in ’70s style.

Farrah Fawcett’s layers are still going strong almost half a century on. According to celebrity hairstylist Guido Palau, the look is easy enough to achieve at home with the right technique. “Take a hair dryer and run a round brush underneath, then part the bangs so you get that ’70s look,” he says. Round-brush shy? A blow-dry brush may be your new best friend.
Sabrina Carpenter’s take on the look (called a butterfly cut) has a modern edge. For a look that’s less voluminous and shaggy, leave the layering until a point just past your bangs at about chin length.

Cher has undergone many hair transformations over the years. But to us, she’ll always be the Cher with long, straight black hair from the 1970s when she was part of The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour, which premiered in 1971 and gave us four seasons of unforgettable fashion and beauty moments. More recently, Demi Moore, Naomi Campbell, and Beyoncé have all put their own spin on the timeless style.
Face-framing layers and fringe

Jane Birkin is a forever muse for all fans of the boho aesthetic, so it’s little wonder that the hallmarks of her beauty look are frequently used as inspiration for runway shows. “Birkin bangs”—her signature fringe paired with low-key layering—is the look women continue to yearn for each summer. Make like Daisy Edgar-Jones and curve the face-framing layers away from your face to create body and dimension, or copy Dakota Johnson’s piece-y fringe and add a dab of dry shampoo to create fluffy volume.

Twiggy’s iconic pixie cut helped to kick-start her career, but the bob that she wore in the ’70s signaled a growing up, of sorts, for the British model. Her chin-length haircut was styled with pronounced waves that appeared to hug her cheekbones and jaw.
Across the pond and throughout her career, Diana Ross experimented with a wide variety of hairstyles in the ’70s. After an Afro and a pixie cut, she revealed a chin-length bob styled in striking wide waves. A cool update to the classic bob, actor Ayo Edebiri picked up on this retro vibe earlier this year, adding a sweet kiss-curl fringe.

Cher is so iconic that she appears twice on this list. In the late ’70s, she sported another, equally inspiring cut: a mane of long S-shaped waves. Now stars like Zendaya and Jung Ho-yeon channel the same free, natural energy, and it’s also appeared on the runway. At Chloé, for example, long (sometimes brushed-out) waves were paired with flowing dresses and blouses. The key? Use minimal product so that the hair looks voluminous and naturally fluffy.
