42 proposed amendments have been received in the Brazilian Congress to deal with the country’s provisional ban on betting, including limitations on slots only and refunds of license fees.

The amendment period lasts until October 13, when the deadline for the revocation of licenses comes.

Some of the proposals deal with restrictions related to the extension of the ban itself. Amendments 14, 16 and 20 are aimed at restricting the ban to online slots, while Amendment 28 allows operators with their licenses to continue working, while law enforcement agencies crack down on illegal operators.

Other amendments deal with the current operators and their situation under the ban. Amendment 11 is aimed at allowing sponsorships to continue until the end of the football season or as much as two years after the measure is adopted, while Amendment 15 postpones the introduction of rules concerning advertising in the new sports betting industry.

Amendment 18 suggests that license fees should be returned for the portion of time that the license was not used; while Amendment 21 calls for the stopping of sanctions for the operators and their removal after five years if the operator meets the requirements of terminating their business.

However, none of the suggested amendments would give extra time to continue betting operations under the existing framework.

The provisional measure is currently at the first stage of the congressional process. It will be reviewed by a Joint Committee before moving to the Chamber of Deputies and then the Senate.
