Loafers have been a classic shoe in nearly every decade of the twentieth century, but there’s just something special about ’90s loafers. In an era where outfits that exuded frugal elegance were the norm, these shoes were the most valuable asset for celebrities like Cameron Diaz, Julia Roberts, and Sarah Jessica Parker.

The ‘90s have since become a key source of inspiration for modern fashion trends, especially when it comes to footwear. For proof, just look to the wide range of loafers that were popular at the time now making a comeback. But the thing is, ’90s-style loafers are so timeless that we don’t really need to look to current street style to demonstrate how to wear them today.

Below, are five ’90s loafers outfits that are still inspiring us today. Wear them this fall—and beyond—for a classic look that never goes out of style.

1.The Pop of Color Shoe

Cameron Diaz was one of the first to show us how to do hard-to-miss loafers (or the red shoe trend, for that matter). In the example above, a pair of red leather shoes were the perfect way to liven up a monochromatic look. All you need to recreate it is a simple black turtleneck, tailored trousers, and a leather bag. So chic.

If you still want to take inspiration from ’90s Diaz, but give it an even more modern touch, combine flared jeans in black with an off-the-shoulder top, then add vivacity with a bold pair of burgundy loafers.

2. The Floral Dress, Reimagined

Julia Roberts, always one to make a style statement, chose velvet loafers instead of the more expected strappy sandals to wear with a floral-print dress on the red carpet for the 1990 film Die Hard 2. Just add some socks or tights and layer a cardigan on top for a chic and cozy look that’s perfect for fall.

Roberts liked to employ comfortable and distinguished shoes to pair with her minidresses, which is probably why she naturally gravitated toward loafers. She did so on red carpets and on walks, and her timeless minidresses remain a must this season to pair with suede loafers.

3. The Forever Classic

We know Sarah Jessica Parker has always had a soft spot for shoes, but the actor and shoe designer gave us one of her most memorable moments when she paired square-heeled loafers with a classic white shirt and a black pencil skirt—a timeless combo that still looks incredible today.

The same formal aesthetic as Parker’s look can be achieved using the same clothes, or it can be reinterpreted with the help of a shirtdress. You attain the same elegance but with a preppy interpretation with the addition of white socks, regardless of whether you wear almond-toe, flat, or slingback loafers.

4. The Elevated ’90s Jean

Much has been made of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy and her ‘90s jeans, but let’s direct our attention now to the timeless loafers she always paired with them. Whether they were in deep chocolate brown or a minimalist, Calvin Klein-approved black, she always proved that basic doesn’t mean boring when it comes to great style.

In the ’90s the color palette was solid, with black, brown, and gray being the favorites. Taking this as a reference, you can create a perfect office look like CBK did above with straight-leg jeans, a black or white shirt, and brown or black loafers. If you’d like to add more dynamism with accessories, you can always add a scarf, headband, or an animal-print bag.

5. Chunky Loafers & Leather

For a look with a bit of edge, look no further than Halle Berry’s 1992 airport outfit above. Chunky black loafers give light-wash jeans a cool factor that can only be matched by her oversized leather jacket on top.

There’s not much you need to do to modernize this look. A trendy barrel-leg jean will ground it squarely in 2026 if you wish, though Berry’s cigarette jeans above are back in style again too. Fashion truly is cyclical, isn’t it?
