My 74-year-old mom moved in after dad went. I lost my job 6 months later. Every month she slid her Social Security check across the kitchen table without a word. I always slid it back. One morning I came downstairs and she was gone. Left a note. “Gone to clean houses.” She came home around 6:45, wiped out, knees clearly bothering her from all the stairs, holding like $35 cash in her hand.
I didn’t yell, but I really wanted to. Asked her why, at her age, after everything. She shrugged, sat down, dropped the cash next to her check on the table same as always and said, “You keep pushing mine back, love. I had to go get my own.” That’s it. That’s all she said. And she didn’t look at me the rest of dinner.
I found a job 3 weeks later, warehouse, nothing special, but steady. She never went cleaning again after that. We still split her check some months now, whoever’s tight that month gets covered. Nobody pushes anything back across that table anymore. I hope I’m a good daughter.
