The World Cup knockout stage has arrived. After 17 days of group stage drama, the 2026 tournament has shifted to the Round of 32, where every match is now win-or-go-home.

Japan got things started early on Monday with a 29th-minute goal from Kaishu Sano, but Brazil‘s Casemiro pulled Seleção even just after the half. Then, Gabriel Martinelli delivered the winner in stoppage time to send Brazil through to the next round.

In the afternoon matchup, Germany and Paraguay engaged in a 120-plus minute thriller that ended 1-1 before a penalty shootout. The Paraguayans then pulled off an all-time stunner as it ended with several saves from Orlando Gill and José Canale sealing things with a kick from the spot.

The Netherlands and Morocco capped off the night with another penalty shootout in one of the most anticipated matches of the tournament. In the end, Morocco got the result they craved.

In the second stunning penalty shootout of the day, Morocco bested the Netherlands 1-1 (3-2 on penalties) in a thrilling Round of 32 matchup to advance to the next round.

In an often frantic, consistently physical matchup, neither team was able to break through in the first half, despite the Moroccans getting a couple of big chances. The first half certainly had its highlights, but they were all on the defensive end, including back-to-back saves from Netherlands goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen.

It all came down to one shot: After misses from both teams in PKs, striker Ismael Saibari — who had multiple tough misses during the game — is the one who sends it home. Morocco is moving on after an excellent game, and the Netherlands is

After winning the coin toss, the Netherland kicks first, and Teun Koopmeiners nails it.

One last possession for the Netherlands, who sprints for a potential last-gasp winner up a man, with Saibari still getting patched up on the sideline. But it isn’t to be, and this game is headed to penalty kicks.

For the second time this game, play is stopped for a player’s bloody face. This time it’s Moroccan striker Ismael Saibari, who is bleeding freely from a cut on his face.

Crysencio Summerville also goes down after getting clipped near the sideline. The referee eventually stops play to check on the Dutch forward, who briefly exits the field to receive treatment, but now appears to be fine to return.

The Netherlands is out of subs, meaning that an injury would be a very tough blow in these final minutes of extra time.

The Dutch use their last two subs for two players who went down with potential injuries — or maybe just the wear of a long, long game.

Netherlands midfielder Frenkie de Jong, who was grabbing at his calf earlier, is subbed out for Marten de Roon.

Soon afterwards goal-scorer Cody Gakpo goes down with what looks like a cramp, and then goes down again after a big hit. Ronald Koeman opts to take him out rather than make him keep playing; Justin Kluivert comes in in Gakpo’s place.

After letting several moments of contact pass, Wilton Sampaio finally calls a foul, giving the Netherlands a free kick near the midline.

That’s the end of the first extra time period. Things are still even at 1-1, thanks to an incredible save from Dutch keeper Bart Verbruggen.

“Cielito Lindo” is now ringing out through the stadium in Monterrey. Clearly plenty of Mexican fans at the game.

That looked sure to be a goal for Morocco, as Soufiane Rahimi gets past the Netherlands back line and lets it loose, but Verbruggen was able to get a foot on in and potentially save the game.

The game will now break into two 15-minute extra time periods, with the teams swapping sides of the field partway through. The World Cup format does not include a golden goal; the entirety of the 30 minutes will be played.

If it’s still tied at that point, the game will head to a penalty shootout.

After Cody Gakpo finally breaks through for the Netherlands in the second half, Issa Diop’s equalizer at the start of stoppage time forces things back level and keeps the game (and Morocco’s tournament) going.

For the second time this gameday, we’re going to extra time. Get ready.
