Athletics catcher Shea Langeliers’ name has been circulating in trade rumors before the Aug. 3 deadline (6 p.m. ET). The slugger suffering a significant injury should put an end to that.
ESPN MLB insider Jeff Passan reported Sunday that Langeliers, a 2026 All-Star, tore the meniscus in his right knee while rounding the basepaths. He will now determine whether he wants to undergo season-ending surgery. Regardless, this essentially ends any trade rumors surrounding the catcher.
What teams would’ve been interested in trading for Shea Langeliers?
Championship contenders looking to add a little more power to their lineups before the deadline will be disappointed to learn of the Langeliers news. The Boston Red Sox (53-50 entering Sunday) were reportedly “salivated over the idea” of adding the 28-year-old catcher. Boston’s American League East rival, the New York Yankees (59-45), was also considered a potential destination for Langeliers. Boston — which ranked 29th in baseball in home runs (98) entering Sunday — needed Langeliers more than New York (150 home runs, No. 2 in baseball).
He may have been the last piece each club needed to gear up for a deep postseason run. Entering Sunday, the right-handed batter was tied for 11th in baseball in home runs (23 in 376 at-bats).

Boston and New York will just have to pivot to another power-hitting catcher before the deadline passes. They should consider pursuing Colorado Rockies star Hunter Goodman. Entering Sunday, he ranked third in baseball in homers (31 in 363 at-bats).
The Red Sox and Yankees had better act fast. With Langeliers’ injury, they’re both running out of options as the deadline draws closer.
