The Kansas City Chiefs took an unbeaten record into Lumen Field for “Sunday Night Football,” and the Seattle Seahawks sent them home with their first loss of the season. In the 20-3 defeat, Patrick Mahomes went 19 of 33 for 165 yards with an interception, and the Chiefs’ offense never reached the red zone.
But late in the game, NBC analyst Cris Collinsworth asked a question about the look on Mahomes’ face, and it drew its own set of answers overnight.
Cris Collinsworth’s Question Sends Fans Back to Patrick Mahomes’ Super Bowl Losses
The question started with a play late in the third quarter. Mahomes was running with the ball when a hit jarred it free. Players from both teams went after the loose ball, and Mahomes dove at it twice before recovering it himself, which kept the drive alive.
Seattle never let its lead slip below 10 points after halftime.
After Mahomes took another hit later in the game, this one in the pocket, Collinsworth tied the two moments together on the broadcast: “That’s the second time I’ve seen that look on Patrick Mahomes’ face. When he went back and recovered that fumble earlier, I saw that same sort of ‘I can’t believe this is happening to me’ look. There it is again. Have you ever seen that look on Patrick Mahomes?”

As a clip of the comment circulated, Pro Football Network’s Alex Kennedy answered with one game in mind: “When the Bucs dominated the Chiefs in Super Bowl LV.”

That game was played Feb. 7, 2021, at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, and the Buccaneers won 31-9. Tom Brady threw three touchdown passes for Tampa Bay.
Mahomes went 26 of 49 for 270 yards with two interceptions and was sacked three times. Like Sunday’s loss in Seattle, it came without a touchdown from Kansas City. All nine of the Chiefs’ points came from Harrison Butker’s field goals.
Kennedy wasn’t the only one with an answer. One fan had a pointed reply to the clip: “It was – checks notes – not the first time we’ve seen that look on Mahomes face.”

Jalen Hurts and the Eagles beat the Chiefs 40-22 in Super Bowl LIX on Feb. 9, 2025, at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans. Hurts threw two touchdown passes and ran for another for Philadelphia, while Mahomes was intercepted twice and sacked six times. All three of Mahomes’ touchdown passes that night came after the Eagles had built a 34-0 lead.

The Pushback Turns to Collinsworth Himself
Some of the pushback skipped the Super Bowl comparisons entirely and went after Collinsworth’s work on Chiefs games. One fan wrote: “I wonder if Collinsworth goes back and listens to himself after every Chiefs game he calls. He’s not embarrassed?”

Collinsworth has been asked about his admiration for Mahomes before. Earlier this month on “The Dan Patrick Show,” host Dan Patrick asked whether he loves Mahomes more than ESPN’s Dan Orlovsky loves Los Angeles Rams star Matthew Stafford. Collinsworth answered: “That would be tough … But probably, yeah, I guess.”
On the field, Sunday’s numbers were lopsided. Kansas City had 213 total yards and 11 first downs to Seattle’s 410 yards and 24 first downs.
The Chiefs, who rank eighth on PFN’s Offense Impact Metric, converted 3 of 11 third downs, and Butker made one of his three field-goal attempts. Mahomes didn’t hide his frustration after the game: “You’ve got to feel it. This sucks. You don’t want to perform like this in prime time.”

The loss left the Chiefs at 5-1 and still first in the AFC West. Their next game is Nov. 1, when they visit the Denver Broncos at Empower Field at Mile High in Week 8. Seattle, now 4-3, is back at Lumen Field on Nov. 2.
