LeBron James watched as the Los Angeles Lakers’ rest-of-season and playoff outlook suffered a major blow during his co-star Luka Dončić’s injury setback in Thursday’s 139-96 blowout road loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Afterward, James attempted to maintain a level-headed approach as the Lakers await a status update on their leading scorer.

Dončić entered Thursday on top of the world, having totaled a whopping 600 points in March to make franchise history and earn Western Conference Player of the Month honors.

The six-time All-Star’s 37.5 points per game average in March and improved defense appeared to be positioning the surging Lakers as West dark horses, having won 16 of their last 18 contests.

However, Thursday was a completely different story, as LA was overpowered by the defending NBA champions, falling behind 44-21 after the first quarter, and never posing a legitimate threat. They trailed throughout, with their deficit swelling as high as 46 points late.

Along the way, Dončić, who has a history of hamstring issues, suffered a left hamstring injury with the Lakers behind 90-58 early in the third quarter. The 27-year-old was promptly ruled out for the remainder of the night, finishing with 12 points, 4 rebounds, 7 assists, and 6 turnovers, shooting 3-for-10 (30%) across 26 minutes.

The timing of the injury sparked concern for the Lakers, with just five outings remaining before the postseason. Dončić joins veteran guard Marcus Smart (ankle) on LA’s injury report, marking another tough blow to its backcourt.

“There’s never a time to get comfortable in this league,” James reacted postgame. “The only thing we do know is that we won’t be in the play-in, so we have that week. But health is wealth, obviously. We’re already [without] Marcus right now, and now Luka. We don’t know what the timetable is, obviously, but we’ll see. We’ll see what happens.”

James added that “nothing has changed” for the Lakers camaraderie-wise despite the tough night, before acknowledging that they will “be tested with the head of the snake [missing].”

Per ESPN’s Dave McMenamin, Dončić “will undergo an MRI on Friday to determine the extent of his left hamstring injury.”

In the meantime, NBA injury insider Dr. Evan Jeffries speculated that the superstar guard could miss anywhere from one-to-two weeks or three-to-six weeks if he is diagnosed with a Grade 1 or Grade 2 hamstring strain.

The Lakers (50-27) are 7-6 without Dončić this season. While still a respectable record, they would likely face little hope of making serious noise in the playoffs without his offensive creation and late-game shot-making.
