The Canadian star impressed the UFC brass with a spectacular KO of the Year contender in the second round of his main event clash.
This past Saturday the premier promotion returned to Canada for UFC Edmonton, headlined by a welterweight clash between Mike Malott and Joaquin Buckley.
Just a day out from their fight, Buckley refused to shake Malott and Dana White’s hands during the ceremonial weigh-in face off, which seemingly lit a fire underneath ‘Proper’ Malott.
And then when they finally stepped into the Octagon, Malott rendered Buckley completely unconscious with a second round knockout.

After knocking out Joaquin Buckley at UFC Edmonton to score his fifth straight knockout, is Mike Malott a serious contender at 170lb?

Dana White congratulated Malott for ‘making a statement’
Surprisingly, the UFC boss was actually in attendance for the event on Saturday, as it has become common for him to skip out on the Fight Night offerings. He took up his spot cageside with Hunter Campbell and other members of the brass to enjoy the night of fights.
And when Malott scored the incredible second round knockout with a huge knee, White was quick to congratulate the Canadian star, telling him ‘That’s how you make a statement’. “Fluffy (Hernandez) was sitting right beside my parents, my dad, my father-in-law, my mental coach and my wife so those five just like, I love you guys,” Malott told Full Send MMA.
“I was so glad they were here and I saw them when I was getting announced but I didn’t want to give them too much attention or focus but as soon as the knockout happened I sat on my knees and turned around and Dana White, Hunter Campbell and Sean Shelby were like, ‘Let’s go!’ Dana was like, ‘That’s how you make a statement’ I was like, ‘Thanks Dana, man.’ I went back over and chatted with them for a second and was like, ‘Thank you, for this, I get to feel this because of you guys, thank you so much for the opportunity,” he continued.

What did Dana White say about Mike Malott’s win?
During the broadcast of the event, the promotion announced that the first numbered event of 2027, UFC 336, will take place in Toronto, Canada. With that, and the fact that Malott came away unscathed, the consensus is that the 34-year-old may end up competing on that card too.
“I don’t know (what our plan is for Malott), we’ll figure that out later on but it would absolutely make sense if he’s good,” White said during the post-fight press conference regarding his inclusion on that event. “Obviously, for Mike to be the main event here, in a big fight in his home country, that’s the way you wanna get it done, he couldn’t have done it any better than that.”
Former champion Jack Della Maddalena is being highlighted as a potential opponent for the Canadian in his next fight, with the Australian currently on a two-fight losing streak.
