Hopefully, you got your nap and enjoyed an extra pot of coffee in preparation for Saturday night’s late kickoff between Purdue and UCLA. It’s the first Big Ten game of the season for both teams, and the Boilermakers and Bruins are hoping to start league play on the right foot.

2nd quarter

2:12 — Purdue 21, UCLA 21. The Boilers convert a 4th-and-2 on a pass from Ryan Browne to Xavier Townsend. Then, the two connect again, this time for a 20-yard touchdown to tie the game. The unsung hero on that fourth-down play was Chauncey Magwood, who delivered a huge block to allow Townsend room to pick up the first down and keep the drive alive.

2:55 — 4th-and-2 coming up for Purdue. The Boilers take a timeout to think about the upcoming play-call. It’s important, and a chance to potentially tie this game before half.

4:33 — Asaad Waseem comes up with a huge catch from Ryan Browne. This one goes for 37 yards on third down to keep the drive moving. Waseem has come up with some big catches for Purdue this season, and that was another one.

6:09 — Another important stop for Purdue’s defense, forcing UCLA into a 3-and-out. The Bruins punt, but a penalty backs up the Boilermakers to their own 10-yard line.

8:19 — The Boilermakers can’t take advantage of the situation and the drive ends after just four plays. Purdue punts and UCLA gets the ball at its own 39-yard line.

9:55 — Purdue’s defense holds and UCLA misses a field goal attempt. The score remains 21-14, giving the Boilermakers a chance to tie the game with another good offensive possession. That was an important stop for Barry Odom’s squad.

11:15 — Nico Iamaleava sustained an injury to his hand, so the Bruins turned to backup quarterback and his younger brother, Madden Iamaleava.

13:29 — Purdue defensive back Don Saunders is down on the field. So was linebacker Jojo Hayden, but he got up much quicker. Saunders was able to get to his feet. He’s a huge player in Purdue’s secondary, and is responsible for the team’s only interception so far this season.

13:47 — UCLA 21, Purdue 14. Offensive coordinator Josh Henson breaks out the Wildcat formation and Fame Ijeboi goes right up the middle for a touchdown. A great drive for the Boilermaker offense to get this game back within a score. Ryan Browne is 4-of-5 for 117 yards and a touchdown.

1st quarter

END — UCLA 21, Purdue 7. Let’s call it like it is, Purdue’s defense has been putrid to start this game. It couldn’t be any worse. Nico Iamaleave has completed 8-of-12 passes for 114 yards and two touchdowns. Semaj Morgan has three catches for 67 yards. The Boilers are moving on this third offensive drive, but the defense has to be better moving forward.

0:40 — Ryan Browne made one heck of a play on 4th-and-short. He coraled a bad snap and turned chicken (expletive) into chicken salad, picking up the first down with his feet and keeping the Boilermaker offense on the field.

4:34 — UCLA 21, Purdue 7. The first turnover of the season proves costly for the Boilermakers. UCLA turns it into another touchdown and takes a two-score lead. The Boilers have been atrocious defensively tonight. UCLA already has 192 yards of offense and is 3-of-3 on third downs.

5:17 — Purdue’s defense is compounding its mistakes. Nico Iamaleava has thrown all over the Boilermakers in the first quarter so far, plus they’ve been hit with a pair of costly penalties.

7:56 — On Purdue’s second possession, Travis Terrell Jr. fumbles the football and it’s recovered by UCLA. It’s the first turnover of the year for the Boilermakers. The play was reviewed and was upheld.

8:27 — UCLA 14, Purdue 7. Another productive drive for UCLA. Nico Iamaleava connects with Semaj Morgan again, this time for a 27-yard touchdown strike. The Boilermakers are struggling to pressure the quarterback and the secondary is soft in coverage again. The Bruins are picking apart Kevin Kane’s defense in the first quarter.

11:45 — Purdue 7, UCLA 7. A HUGE response from Purdue’s offense. Ryan Browne delivers a perfect strike to Xavier Townsend, who raced 75 yards to the end zone for a touchdown. That was Purdue’s most explosive play of the season and it ties the ball game in Pasadena.

11:56 — UCLA 7, Purdue 0. Nico Iamaleava’s first touchdown pass of the season comes on UCLA’s opening drive of the night. He connected with Semaj Morgan from 20 yards out to get into the end zone. A throw that beat Purdue’s defense over the top. That drive went 7 plays for 79 yards.

13:53 — Poor start defensively for Purdue. The Boilers surrendered a 15-yard run and Charles Correa was flagged for a facemask on the first play from scrimmage. UCLA has already picked up a pair of first downs to start this game.

Pregame

• UCLA will get the ball first tonight.

• Purdue is rolling with black helmets, white jerseys and white pants for tonight’s game against UCLA. The Boilers are looking for their first win in a Big Ten game since 2023 and their first win in a conference opener since 2021.

• In the pre-game interview, head coach Barry Odom said Purdue’s strength staff and nutrition staff have prepared the team for tonight’s 11 p.m. ET kickoff. He says “Our kick time is exactly when we needed it.”

Kickoff between Purdue and UCLA is scheduled for 11 p.m. ET. The game will air on Big Ten Network. It is the conference opener for both teams.

Purdue injuries

The Boilermakers will be without multiple players on Saturday night, per the team’s injury report. Five players will miss the Big Ten opener in Pasadena:

• DB Mister Clark (out for game)
• OL Joey Tanona (out for game)
• DE Elo Modozie (out for game)
• TE Kylan Fox (out for season)
• DB Raderrion Daniels (out for season)

What’s at stake

Purdue Boilermakers

It’s no secret what Purdue is playing for this weekend. The Boilermakers have lost 21 straight games to Power Four opponents and have not won a Big Ten game since 2023. A win over UCLA on Saturday night would snap both of those droughts.

Additionally, Purdue hasn’t won a Big Ten opener since a 13-9 victory over Illinois in 2021. The Boilers also haven’t won a conference opener on the road since a 2010 win over Northwestern in Evanston.

UCLA Bruins

New head coach Bob Chesney is looking to make a statement in his first season at UCLA. The Bruins are already off to a 2-0 start, but a win over Purdue would give the program its first 3-0 start to a season since 2023. A win would also give this team some momentum heading into a long road trip to Maryland next weekend.

UCLA has endured losing seasons in back-to-back years. If UCLA can get off to a 3-0 start, it puts Chesney in a good position to have the Bruins on the right side of .500 at the end of the season.
