Davis released a statement after being fired, saying, “Tonight, I was let go by the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill. My desire was to continue to coach here. This opportunity has truly been such a blessing. I thank Jesus literally every day for giving me the opportunity, relationships and experiences with the kids and my staff. I am very proud of what we were able to accomplish together. My goal is to coach again in the very near future.”

Davis took over at his alma mater in 2021 following Roy Williams’ retirement. He led the program to instant success. A national championship game run, along with defeating Duke in Mike Krzyzewski’s final home game.

However, the Tar Heels missed the NCAA Tournament entirely in 2023 before a Sweet Sixteen appearance the following year. The roller coaster ride has been highs and low.

UNC owes Davis $5 million per the terms of his buyout. As for his replacement, many names have been floated but there’s no real frontrunner. This will likely be the first time in five decades the Tar Heels will go outside the UNC tree for the next head basketball coach.
