The story of one of the NFL’s most hyped prospects ended in disaster as Robert Griffin III, despite seeming like a revolutionary dual-threat quarterback for his time, couldn’t stay in the league long enough.
Even after moving into sports media, he hasn’t ruled out the possibility of making a comeback. But after his latest bid to return to the NFL, fans are growing tired of his repeated attempts.
Why Fans Don’t Want Robert Griffin III Back in the NFL
Griffin won the 2011 Heisman Trophy during a spectacular career with the Baylor Bears, and the then-Washington Redskins selected him second overall in the 2012 NFL Draft.
He continued his play at the professional level. As a rookie quarterback, he set league records for passer rating and touchdown-to-interception ratio, earning Offensive Rookie of the Year honors and a Pro Bowl selection.
However, a severe injury in the playoffs to his knee caused damage to both the ACL and LCL ligaments. From that point on, he was never the same.
He continued his career with Washington and the Cleveland Browns, sat out the 2017 season, and then spent three seasons as a backup with the Baltimore Ravens.
After last playing in the NFL in 2020, he became an ESPN analyst in 2021 before joining Fox Sports in 2025. But the itch to return to the NFL hasn’t gone away, and he has previously said he stays in football shape.

After early-season injuries to starting quarterbacks including Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, Sam Darnold, Kyler Murray, and Jaxson Dart, Griffin made another attempt to entice teams to bring him in.
He shared a clip captioned, “My Girls said they want to see Daddy play football again, so tell your favorite team to call,” showing him taking multiple snaps in an open field to show his movement and throwing abilities were still intact.

Unfortunately, fans didn’t want the return to become a reality, as one fan mockingly wrote, “Bro, nobody is calling you.”

One fan, though, really wanted Griffin back on the field, albeit for a very different reason, as they wrote, “Please do so because you’re a horrendous commentator and I’d love not to hear you on the call again.”
However, one fan put it more succinctly, writing, “It’s over for you, bud.”

The jokes also started flowing, as one fan mocked, “Better go sign up for ur local 37u team.”
“You’ve been finished, UNC. Give it up,” one fan argued, while sharing a screenshot of his career page that last showed him playing in 2020.

Another fan used his caption as the starting point for their joke, mocking, “Even they’re sick of his [expletive]. They’re telling him to get out of the house.”
But even fans who wanted to take him seriously didn’t think the clip was the best sales pitch, as one fan argued, “These videos do not prove guys can play in the NFL. The worst QB in the league can do this same thing.”
It remains to be seen if any team will actually give him a shot at a return. But for now, it looks unlikely that NFL fans are open to the possibility of him making a comeback for their respective squads.
