Payday isn’t coming for New England Patriots star cornerback Christian Gonzalez yet. The team is holding firm in contract negotiations with Gonzalez and isn’t willing to fork over a lot of money to reward one of the elite CBs in the NFL.

The NFL world is, however, ripping the Patriots and speculating on Gonzalez’s future if no agreement is reached.

NFL World Reacts to Standstill in Christian Gonzalez’s Negotiations

Gonzalez is waiting to be rewarded for his early success in the NFL. He has established himself as one of the premier secondary pieces and wants to be paid handsomely.

Devon Witherspoon recently reset the market as the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history with a four-year, $132 million extension. Gonzalez shares the same agent as Witherspoon and is seeking a similar deal, but the Patriots won’t grant him that right now.

If these negotiations continue to spiral, a trade might end up on the table, though it’s unlikely. One person hopes Gonzalez could end up on their favorite team, the New York Giants.

Gonzalez won’t be a free agent until after the 2027 season because the Patriots picked up his fifth-year option. But if the relationship deteriorates due to failed negotiations, the Patriots might have a situation similar to Micah Parsons in Dallas, where a point of no return could leave a trade as the only outcome. The negotiations have found themselves a talking point in the press, and it hasn’t helped reach a deal at all.

“Things may get ugly if the Patriots and Christian Gonzalez are going to be negotiating through the press, and the Pats only have themselves to blame because Robert Kraft is the one that decided to open that can of worms for absolutely no reason at all,” said Patriots podcaster Matt St. Jean.

“Maybe I just got so used to Bill Belichick after 24 years, not to mention the way Brad Stevens conducts business for the Boston Celtics, but as soon as the New England Patriots started talking about Christian Gonzalez’s contract publicly, I started getting nervous,” added Dan Kelley.

Regardless of the publicity of the contract dispute, the NFL world isn’t siding with the Patriots anyway. They believe Gonzalez deserves his extension, and that not doing so before the season would be irresponsible.

“If we go into the regular season without an extension in place for Christian Gonzalez, I think that would be a fundamental failure by the Patriots’ front office,” said Ethan Hurwitz, who covers the Patriots.

“It sucks that the Patriots feel the need to mess with Christian Gonzalez in regard to the structure of his contract. He’s earned a legit deal without the games,” said the account named ‘Savage,’ who also covers the Patriots.

The Patriots are playing games, and Gonzalez, who ranked 24th on PFN’s CB Impact Rankings last season, is returning the favor.

Gonzalez hasn’t held out for a new deal but expects his payday to come soon. It’s worth monitoring to see whether he soon becomes the highest-paid CB in NFL history or whether the relationship reaches a breaking point that could spell disaster for New England.
