Lane Johnson spent years making life miserable for pass rushers. Finding someone who can replace him is now Philadelphia’s problem.
The Eagles star’s surprise retirement brought an emotional response from former teammates and fellow NFL players. Jason Kelce’s message carried the affection of a brother. Emmanuel Acho sounded like someone watching the credits roll on a favorite movie.
Jason Kelce and Emmanuel Acho Honor Lane Johnson’s Eagles Career
Johnson announced his retirement Tuesday, Oct. 6, during his 14th NFL season. He leaves with two Super Bowl rings, six Pro Bowl selections and five Associated Press All-Pro honors. That is quite a collection for one locker.
Kelce opened his tribute with something more personal than a résumé.
“Lane Johnson is a special player, but more importantly a special person! I love him like a brother!” Kelce wrote.
“For the past decade, Lane has been the best right tackle in the NFL. His athleticism, technique, strength and size combined to make him a player few could get around.”
Lane Johnson is a special player, but more importantly a special person! I love him like a brother!
For the past decade, Lane has been the best Right tackle in the NFL. His athleticism, technique, strength, and size, combined to make him a player few could get around. His pass set and movements looked more like an art than someone who punched people for a living. It was a pure joy to watch him play for all these years, but even more so, it was a pure joy to be his friend. Lane could make me laugh, cry, and smile all in a matter of hours. In the meeting room cracking jokes, in his car listening to country music lyrics, at the cafeteria talking about life, I cherish the memories, they give me so much joy. Congratulations on retirement, I loved ever second of watching you play, and am proud that I got to share the field with you @LaneJohnson65

That last sentence should probably come with a support group for opposing edge rushers.
Acho also gave Johnson his flowers, emphasizing the toughness that helped define his career.

“Lane Johnson, one of the greatest right tackles in NFL history. One of the greatest Philadelphia Eagles in history. One of the toughest dudes, mentally and physically you’ll ever meet,” Acho wrote.
“Enjoy retirement, brother. The Eagles don’t win those Super Bowls without you. 🦅🦅🦅”
In a separate tribute, Acho captured the sadness surrounding the farewell.
“And there there was one. Truly the end of an era 😭😭😭,” he added.

Lane Johnson’s Departure Leaves Philadelphia With a Difficult Assignment
The football consequences arrived right alongside the tributes.
“It might be a wrap for the Eagles,” former NFL receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh said in a clip shared by “Speakeasy.”

Philadelphia already had work to do up front. The Eagles placed 14th in PFN’s Offensive Line Impact Metric after Week 3. Through Week 4, they sit 27th with a 68.5 grade. Losing a player of Johnson’s caliber makes that repair job considerably tougher.
Robert Griffin III acknowledged the size of the hole while welcoming what retirement could mean for Johnson personally.
“Eagles right tackle, Super Bowl champion and Philadelphia legend Lane Johnson has retired from the NFL,” Griffin wrote. “Massive loss for the Eagles. MASSIVE gain for his family and his mental health.”
Johnson’s announcement explained that his personal and family priorities had changed and that he needed to focus on his mental health. The 36-year-old had hoped to finish another season before deciding to step away.
The Eagles will spend the coming weeks figuring out what to do at the right tackle spot. Kelce and Acho have already made their verdict on the departing one pretty clear. Two championship teams had Johnson holding down that spot, and the men who shared his locker room know exactly what that was worth.
