The New Orleans Saints couldn’t ask for a much better opportunity to make an early statement as they open the season on the road against the Detroit Lions, and a win would immediately give fans a reason to believe this team could be different in 2026.

But would it be enough to say the Saints are for real?

That might still be an overreaction.

The Saints are 4-1 in their last five season openers, with last year’s loss to the Arizona Cardinals being the only exception. Starting fast clearly hasn’t been a problem for New Orleans, but maintaining that success throughout an entire season has been a different story.

Detroit also won’t be at full strength.

The Lions will be without key players including Brian Branch, Kerby Joseph, Isiah Pacheco and Cade Mays. That gives New Orleans some opportunities to take advantage of, particularly against a Detroit secondary missing two important pieces.

At the same time, the Lions still have plenty of firepower.

Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, Jahmyr Gibbs and Sam LaPorta give Detroit several ways to create problems for the Saints, while Aidan Hutchinson remains one of the league’s most dangerous defenders.

That’s what would make a Saints victory so intriguing.

If New Orleans can go into Detroit start the season strong with a win, it would be hard to not be optimistic. It would show that the Saints are capable of competing with a team that has legitimate expectations entering the season.

So, would the Saints be for real if they win in Detroit?

Maybe not yet.

But it would certainly be time to start believing they could be.
