Kevin Durant is one of the greatest players in NBA history. He’s a two-time NBA champion, a two-time NBA Finals MVP, a one-time NBA MVP, a 16-time All-Star, and a four-time Scoring Champion.
Despite all his accolades, Durant is humble enough to acknowledge the legends who came before him. In a recent one-on-one conversation with NBA legend Hakeem Olajuwon, Durant had nothing but love for the big man.
Kevin Durant Gave Hakeem Olajuwon His Due Flowers
Durant had the opportunity to interview Houston Rockets legend Olajuwon on his media network show “Boardroom.” KD and Hakeem took a look back at the NBA legend’s career.
Looking back, Olajuwon is undoubtedly one of the greatest players to ever play in the league. He is also arguably the greatest Rockets player in history. After playing 17 years in Houston, he led the franchise to two championships in 1994 and 1995.
It’s also worth noting that it was with the Rockets when Olajuwon won an NBA MVP award and two Defensive Player of the Year awards. He also realized 12 All-Star selections and six All-NBA First Team selections.
With all those accolades, Hakeem was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2008.
With all that in mind, there’s no questioning the Hall of Famer’s credibility as the Rockets’ greatest of all time. Apparently, current Rockets star Durant understands that as well.
During KD’s interview with Hakeem, the Rockets star had nothing but praise for the basketball legend.
“It’s a true honor to be in your presence,” Durant said. “You’re an icon. Hakeem Olajuwon, one of the greatest players to walk the Earth. … Hakeem Olajuwon, ladies and gentlemen. The GOAT. The great legend.”
While Durant won’t be known as the greatest Rockets player of all time when he decides to hang up the laces, there’s no questioning that he’d be recognized as one of the greats to ever suit up for the team.
This year, Durant is making waves in Houston, assisting Alperen Şengün in trying to chase after the coveted NBA title. While the Rockets proved a threat in the Western Conference with Şengün as their leader last season, the addition of Durant has undoubtedly increased their playoff chances.
Durant and Şengün are set to participate in the 2026 NBA All-Star Game for the first time as Rockets teammates. After the break, the duo will be put to the test as the race to the 2026 NBA Playoffs commences.
