Dustin Poirier hopes that UFC 329 doesn’t derail the positive changes Conor McGregor has made.

In recent weeks, Poirier has been battling his own demons after an arrest led to him speaking openly about the difficulties he’s faced in retirement.

It wasn’t surprising to see McGregor criticize some of Poirier’s public comments considering the history they have with each other inside the Octagon.

Despite this, ‘The Diamond’ took a different approach when sharing his thoughts on what happened this past weekend in Las Vegas.

Dustin Poirier hopes that UFC 329 doesn’t undo positive changes Conor McGregor has made

Dustin Poirier isn’t ready to put his past with Conor McGregor fully behind him following the way their rivalry developed during his career.

However, when reflecting on UFC 329, Poirier was able to overlook his feud with ‘The Mac’ to say that he hopes the way the main event went doesn’t result in his former foe spiralling.

McGregor has made it clear that he still plans on returning, but the way July 11 played out could have an impact on his personal life.

“He was a real fighter and I believe that’s still in him,” Poirier said on THE FIGHT with Teddy Atlas. “I just hope this doesn’t pull him in a negative way. This gravitation of bad things happening over and over again because it seemed like from the outside, like he was getting things together.

“He was going to church, he was spending more time with his family. The way he was talking seemed like he was trying to find the straight and narrow. I just hope this doesn’t mix up what he’s got going on in his normal life… I hope he stays on the track.”

As the only person to share the Octagon with McGregor on three occasions, Poirier knows the former two-division champion well.

He doubts any notion that McGregor quit but believes that the biggest name in MMA is addicted to making headlines rather than fighting at this stage.
