The Edmonton Oilers are trying to reshape their roster, but one major decision continues to hold everything up. Darnell Nurse’s trade request has created more questions than answers, and the lack of movement has only fueled speculation about what comes next.

With several roster decisions tied to his future, Edmonton cannot afford to let the situation drag on much longer.

Craig MacTavish Explains Why a Darnell Nurse Trade Remains Far From Certain

Despite weeks of trade speculation, Oilers legend Craig MacTavish is not convinced Nurse is guaranteed to leave Edmonton this summer.

Speaking on Oilers Now with Bob Stauffer, MacTavish suggested the outcome depends less on the team’s desire to move the defenseman and more on how determined Nurse is to force the issue.

“Depends how badly Darnell wants out,” MacTavish said. “He’s still a super useful player.” He also pointed to Nurse’s chemistry with Connor Murphy, adding that “he played his best hockey with Connor Murphy,” who recently signed a five-year extension.

From MacTavish’s perspective, this pairing gives Edmonton a legitimate hockey reason to keep Nurse if a suitable trade never develops.

MacTavish also admitted he would not be surprised if the veteran defenseman remains with the team. “I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s back, unless he really wants out that badly,” he said, while noting he has no firsthand knowledge of Nurse’s intentions.

His comments reflect the difficult position facing general manager Stan Bowman, who must balance the player’s request with the team’s competitive needs.

The biggest obstacle remains Nurse’s full no-movement clause. He has reportedly approved three destinations: the Philadelphia Flyers, Boston Bruins, and Pittsburgh Penguins. While Anaheim and San Jose have been linked as potential fits, neither is currently on his approved list, leaving Edmonton with limited flexibility.

MacTavish believes that restriction could eventually change. “He’ll expand that list unless somehow Stan and Jeff can get a deal done with the three teams,” he said, acknowledging that such a deal “is going to be a tough deal.”

Edmonton Faces a Difficult Balancing Act if Nurse Leaves

MacTavish also stressed that moving Nurse is not simply about creating salary cap room. The Oilers still need someone capable of replacing the heavy workload he handles on the blue line, making any trade much more complicated than a straightforward salary dump.

“It’s going to be a tough deal because the Oilers need a player who’s going to come in there and play those minutes. And it’s going to be tough to do,” MacTavish said.

Nurse averaged close to 21 minutes per game last season, and replacing that role with an NHL-ready defenseman will not be easy, especially while trying to move a contract carrying a $9.25 million annual cap hit.

Edmonton is also working to improve its goaltending before next season, making additional cap space valuable. However, Bowman’s front office cannot ignore the immediate impact a Nurse departure would have on the defensive group.

Until more teams enter the conversation or one of Nurse’s preferred teams meets Edmonton’s asking price, MacTavish believes the possibility of seeing the veteran defenseman report to training camp in an Oilers jersey remains very real.
