K-beauty’s focus on lightweight textures and dewy finishes translates to some of the best Korean makeup for mature skin, with formulas that glide over texture and fine lines instead of making them stand out more. “When it comes to addressing fine lines, wrinkles, and discoloration, the key lies in the formula balance,” says Cho Eun Bee, founder of AOU Cosmetics and Kitts Salon and a Seoul-based celebrity makeup artist whose clients include Aespa, IVE, and Blackpink’s Jennie. “In Korean beauty, some of the most effective base products are those that are hydrating yet have a certain density to them, allowing for full coverage without settling into lines.” Both those qualities apply to cult-classic cushion foundation Jungsaemmool, which is finally available stateside. To help you build a full routine, we also tested face primer, concealer, brow pencil, eyeliner, mascara, blush, lip color, and a tinted SPF. Below, your beginner guide to the most flattering Korean makeup for mature skin.

Frequently asked questions

Best Primer: Espoir Glowrizer Face Primer

Espoir Glowrizer Face Primer

Espoir Dewlike Jello Glowrizer Primer

This moisturizing jelly primer wins for how smooth and refreshed it makes aging skin look and feel. It’s packed with hydrating, firming ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, peptides, and vitamin C, which makes it feel like a refreshing gel moisturizer. “It focuses on creating a hydrated, luminous base rather than a matte surface, which helps soften the appearance of fine lines,” says Ethan Wonuk Hwang, MD, a cosmetic physician at Cheongdam LeBelle Dermatologic Clinic in Seoul. Even if you tend to wear matte makeup, our experts still suggest a dewy primer like this one to help skin look revitalized. “For anyone over 40, please don’t be afraid of a glowy, dewy look,” says K-beauty expert Michelle Lee, chief marketing officer of Landing International and former editor in chief of Allure. “It’s that little bit of light reflection that will make your skin look plumper and create the illusion of more volume. This primer does double duty to smooth out texture and give skin that lit-from-within glow.”

“I have dry skin, so I was excited to see how this pink, liquid-jello-like serum-slash primer upleveled my glow. It feels cool and refreshing on application, and—though it does take a second to try—it layers under makeup. After applying foundation on top of it, my skin looked more luminous, but not greasy–except, perhaps, for a shiny patch on my nose. Maybe next time I’ll stop short of applying the Glowrizer there,”—Jenny Berg, Glamour contributor

Best Foundation: Jungsaemmool Essential Skin Nuder Cushion

Jungsaemmool Essential Skin Nuder Cushion Foundation

Jungsaemmool Essential Skin Nuder Cushion Foundation

This iconic cushion foundation made by South Korea’s most famous makeup artist, Jung Saem Mool, is our top foundation for mature skin—purely because of how good it looks when applied correctly. The formula has a naturally glowy (but not overly dewy) finish that’s easy to build in light layers. As with all cushions, there’s a learning curve, especially if you’re used to liquid foundations. Make sure you apply it in thin layers, pressing the brush into the palette to remove excess product before tapping it on your face. Applied correctly, it gives skin a beautiful, filtered glow. “As we get older, heavy makeup is not our friend,” says Lee. “I used to try to cover every freckle and spot, but I realized my skin looks much better with lighter, more balmy coverage. This cushion gives you that your-skin-but-better finish that I’ve been chasing for years, and the buildable coverage means it blurs rather than settling into fine lines.”

Glamour contributor Berg says:

“First, I like how handy and user-friendly this compact is, with its built-in mirror and sponge. When I first started dabbing the product on, I was thinking it wouldn’t be enough coverage for me—but it did even out my skin tone, and the hue I chose had that natural, your-skin-but-better look. For problem areas or red spots, I would go for a little more coverage. But to pep up my complexion on an ordinary Tuesday, where a Teams call is the only place I need to be ‘seen,’ this is perfect.”—J.B

Best Tinted Sunscreen: Beauty of Joseon Daily Tinted Fluid Sunscreen

Beauty of Joseon Daily Tinted Fluid Sunscreen

This tinted SPF is a top Glamour-editor-approved pick for tinted moisturizer, and it’s also ideal for mature skin types. The dewy, sheer formula gives just the right amount of coverage without caking or settling into lines, and it feels like a true tinted moisturizer instead of a heavy sunscreen. “Korean skin care brands are obviously quite well-known for having some of the best, most cosmetically elegant facial sunscreens,” says Lee. “SPF is the single most important thing you can do for your skin at pretty much any age. I love this one since it’s a gorgeous formula that wears well and it’s tinted, so you could just wear this on those no-makeup makeup days.” While the resulting finish is balanced—not too dewy or matte—you can pair it with a powder on your T-zone if you prefer a more velvety look.

“This tinted sunscreen product is both a welcome wash of color and sun protection at the same time. While it does not provide heavy coverage the way a foundation would, it does diminish the severity of age spots and freckles without looking like a mask. And the texture of the product is a pleasure—it’s a nongloppy liquid that blends in a flash.” —Charlotte Twine, Glamour contributor

Best Concealer: Glow Not Dry Concealer

Glow Not Dry Concealer

If you’re looking for a concealer that won’t settle into lines, this incredibly hydrating cream formula wins. It’s also Cho’s top pick. “It has a moisturizing, slightly rich texture, but once applied, it feels incredibly lightweight on the skin,” she says. “That combination is what helps smooth over fine lines while still providing enough coverage to even out discoloration, without looking heavy or cakey.” In other words, you can use it to conceal dark circles, tap it over crow’s-feet, or spot-conceal discoloration, dark spots, and redness. While mature skin benefits from an ultrahydrating formula like this one, it can feel slightly rich if you’re oily in some areas, such as your T-zone. We suggest pairing it with a setting powder if that’s the case.

“This concealer has a miraculously smooth texture that does not cake up—a godsend. The pink color also corrects my purple undereye circles. However, I will say that it requires a deft hand; I had to use the thinnest of layers of the pink shade (the dual-sided container also comes with a pan of white color) and blend really well. In that sense, I use it first as a corrector to neutralize my undereye circles, then follow with a skin-color concealer. And since Glow doesn’t cake, even after a day’s wear, it combines with other concealers very well.” —C.T.

Best Brow Product: Etude Drawing Eye Brow

Etude Drawing Eye Brow

Etude Drawing Eye Brow

This thin, angled pencil glides over skin and makes it easy to draw super-precise hairs and recreate Korean makeup’s youthful brow technique. If you’re used to more pigmented brow pencils, know that it’s not designed to create that look. “Two key words to remember: softer and dewier,” says Lee. “The look of Korean makeup tends to focus on softening one’s features.” That also applies to eyebrows, which have a specific look in Korean makeup: light, soft, and not overly arched or angled. “The Korean way of drawing brows tends to be a much lighter touch, and with a straighter, less arched shape,” says Lee. “Try a shade that’s a little lighter than your natural brows to soften the look. What I love about this brow pencil is how it mimics actual hair strokes rather than drawing on that flat, blocky brow that can look harsh and dated. A full, well-shaped brow is one of the most lifting things you can do for your face.”

Glamour contributor Berg says:

“A spoolie is a must on a brow pencil, and this model has one built in. (Check!) It has a super thin, flat, and angled tip that allows for precise application, but I found that I had to press it pretty firmly into the skin in order for the pigment to show. The overall effect was a bit more subtle than the look I get with some of the other brow pencils I use, but it was enough to give my sparse brows more definition.”—J.B

Best Eyeliner: Clio Sharp, So Simple Waterproof Pencil Liner

Clio Sharp, So Simple Waterproof Pencil Liner

Clio Sharp, So Simple Waterproof Pencil Liner

We chose this waterproof pencil liner over a liquid option because our experts found it more flattering on mature skin. Plus, these twist-up pencils are so precise and easy to use, you can basically do any eyeliner look with them, from flicks to tracing your waterline. “Pencils are great because they can create a softer look,” says Lee. “Especially as we get older, this tends to look quite flattering. This pencil is so precisely fine-tipped that you can do the most delicate tight-line or the thinnest possible wing without it looking overdone—and the waterproof formula means it’s actually still there at the end of the day. And it’s so affordable.” If you want an even subtler look, swap out classic black for one of the more muted shades like Cacao Brown or Mute Gray.

Best Blush: Peripera Syrupy Tok Cheek

Peripera Syrupy Tok Cheek

Liquid and cream blushes win over powder for mature skin, thanks to their hydrating formulas and dewy, flexible finishes—and this one is especially easy to apply. “I’ve become so devoted to Korean cream and liquid blush because powder can emphasize texture and just sits on the skin rather than melting into it,” says Lee. “This has the most gorgeous, jelly-like texture that gives you that flushed, healthy look. It also layers beautifully over a dewy base, which is always how I’m wearing my skin these days.” You can easily blend it out with your fingers, a brush, or a sponge, but placement is important. “Blush placement is very personal in Korea,” says Lee. “There are certainly some placements—like right under the eyes—that are more trend-based, but people also focus on finding the best placement for their face shape. As we age, we’re typically either looking for more lift or more volume. If you want a more lifted look, try more angled upward. But for more volume, try the apple of your cheek.”

“I have a new favorite blush! First off, the color is divine. I’m always on the hunt for blue-toned blushes, which is hard to find these days, in order to match the cool-toned undercolor on my face. Most blushes read very warm. This lavender-pink blush pairs perfectly with my pale skin, and the liquid texture is light and buildable, without being splotchy and hard to blend. I will treasure every drop.” —C.T.

Best Lip Product: Sulwhasoo Perfecting Lip Color

Sulwhasoo Perfecting Lip Color

Sulwhasoo Perfecting Lip Color

Sulwhasoo is most known for its antiaging ginseng skin care, but the brand also makes this deeply hydrating tinted lip balm that helps smooth lip lines. “This formula helps maintain lip hydration while delivering a refined finish without emphasizing texture,” says Dr. Hwang, who points out the balm’s inclusion of ginseng seed oil. “We tend to lose volume and moisture with age, so I really like formulas that help to plump and hydrate,” says Lee. “This lip color, which comes in gorgeous shades and has this cool dual layer moisture technology that really hydrates on a major level.” For the most flattering effect, she recommends combining it with a Korean lip liner, which is “often chunkier and rounder, meant to blur the lip line rather than create a harsh line.” (Lee loves the Unleashia Oh! Happy Day Lip Pencils.) “Harsh lines can make perioral lip lines—those vertical wrinkles around lips—look even more prominent,” she says. “Combining Korean techniques and products in this case can help soften the look.”

Frequently asked questions

What type of Korean makeup is good for older skin?

“In Korean makeup, there is often a focus on achieving a skinlike finish and glow, which is particularly beneficial for mature skin, as overly matte products can accentuate texture and dryness,” says Dr. Hwang. Lee agrees: “Dewier coverage, as opposed to matte, can give a more plumped effect,” she says. “There’s also more emphasis on hybrid products in Korea. So it’s common to have skin care ingredients in makeup, which not only sets a nice base but also helps your skin in the long run.”

What ingredients should you look for in Korean makeup for mature skin?

“For mature skin, I usually recommend focusing on hydrating, skin-conditioning ingredients in the formula to help prevent makeup from settling into fine lines,” says Dr. Hwang. His list of recommended ingredients includes glycerin, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, peptides, and brightening antioxidants like vitamin C. “You also want to look for a flexible, lightweight texture that moves naturally with the skin,” he says. The formulas on our list were all tested for their compatibility with skin texture, lines, and wrinkles.

What are some tips on how to conceal wrinkles with Korean makeup?

Our experts agree: It’s less about concealer application technique and more about the right skin prep, and the right concealer. “When a product is truly well-made, it should work effortlessly with the skin,” says Cho. “You shouldn’t have to overthink it.”

Lee also says that focusing too much on concealer application technique can actually backfire. “I know that people share all sorts of concealer techniques to mask the harsh shadows of nasolabial folds and other areas, but my hot take is that I think those techniques can sometimes make you look worse,” she says. “I’ll be 51 soon and have realized as I’ve gotten older that a lighter touch with makeup is absolutely most flattering in every way.” Besides applying your concealer in thin, light layers, the best thing you can do is make sure skin starts off hydrated. “My pro tip is to start with great skin care,” says Lee. “Plumping your skin with a good milky toner and moisturizer will help your makeup sit better, so it doesn’t settle into wrinkles and accentuate them.”

What’s a good Korean skin prep routine for mature skin?

The best Korean skin care routine for mature skin is all about enhancing skin elasticity and targeting visible signs of aging. As Lee says, the right toners and moisturisers will help your makeup “sit better” and look fresher throughout the day. Extend that same philosophy to all your skin prep products, including cleanser, cleansing oil, eye cream, ampoule, sunscreen, and serum. While many of the Korean makeup picks on our list are infused with hydrating ingredients, they’re meant to enhance (not replace!) your skin prep. So before you reach for that cushion foundation, make sure you’re treating skin to ingredients like bakuchiol and retinol, which boost collagen production, as well as nourishing and calming ingredients like green tea, ceramide, and cica (Centella asiatica), which are essential to support the skin barrier, soothe sensitive skin, and transform even extremely dry skin into dewy glass skin. Start with our list of the best Korean skin care products.

How we tested Korean makeup for mature skin

As a beauty editor since 2013, I’ve had a firsthand look at the most iconic Korean makeup launches, including the best foundations, concealers, and eye and lip makeup for mature skin. For this story, I started by reviewing my personal trend research on noteworthy K-beauty products from past trips to Seoul. I then interviewed a local dermatologist, celebrity makeup artist, and K-beauty expert for additional insights. Glamour testers tried their top picks and evaluated each based on longevity, coverage, ability to blur fine lines and wrinkles, and more. When reviewing each formula, I always take tester experience, expert insights, and my own research into account in order to help Glamour readers make the most informed decision.
