We’re barely a week into the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but the stories coming out of this edition are already proving to be some of the most entertaining ones we’ve seen. Right after the United States kicked things off and got the ball rolling with a 4-1 win over Paraguay, Spain were held to a goalless draw against Cape Verde, and Lionel Messi made a bit of World Cup history with a hat-trick.

When all is said and done, the 2026 World Cup may go down as one of the most unique showcases in soccer history. And if you need any more proof of that, just check out what happened in Boston when fans of the Scotland National Team descended onto the city.

Scotland Fans’ Appetite For Beer Leaves Boston Wide-Eyed

As Scotland prepped for their World Cup opener against Haiti, their fans decided to get comfortable in Boston, a city renowned for its fervent sporting culture. But even die-hard Bostonians weren’t prepared for the “Tartan Army.”

After Scotland picked up a 1-0 win over Haiti, fans of the team celebrated like there was no tomorrow. Reports coming out of Boston revealed that the pubs had nearly run dry after the celebrations. Some bar owners reported that the amount of beer they’d sold on the day trumped even St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in the city.

“We’ve been here for over 30 years, and we’ve never seen anything like it,” an employee of Hennessy’s Bar in downtown Boston told the Boston Globe. “We tripled St. Patrick’s Day.”

The story went viral on social media after an American spoke to NBC Boston and noted how civil the Scottish fans were despite the sheer amount of liquor they consumed.

“Scottish World Cup fans drank so much beer in Boston that: Sam Adams ran out of Boston Lager, an emergency shipment was needed. One bar sold 3x its St. Patrick’s Day sales. Another sold out entirely,” noted one account on X.

Tom Shattuck, host of the Burn Barrell podcast, put forward a grand plan: “Give this dude a promotion and naturalize every Scottish mad man who made Boston fantastic over the last week.”

Shawn Chittle, Senior Director at the Executive Office of the President, wrote, “Scotland, my grandmother’s home country. Makes us all proud how they have behaved here as our guests in America.”

Comedian Alex Edelman went one step further, writing, “I’m sorry but out-drinking Bostonians is an accomplishment on par with winning the whole tournament.”

Bars in Boston will look to restock on the double when Scotland prepare to go up against Morocco in Foxborough on Friday night. Between the Scottish fans taking it all in and the Japanese fans enjoying everything Texas has to offer, it appears this iteration of the FIFA World Cup has a little taste of culture for everyone.
