Hey, Tiger Tiger—did you see the ending to DTF St. Louis? The HBO miniseries has officially wrapped up its riveting mystery anchored by suburban infidelity. I’ll keep it spoiler-free here; just know that the conclusion to this sad story makes it a quintessential modern American tragedy. But what happens next? Though it’s hard to imagine these characters coming back, is there a remote possibility of a second season?

Originally based on a 2017 true-crime article published by The New Yorker, DTF St. Louis ultimately tells its own sordid saga about a marriage and a friendship torn apart by secrets, sex, and dissatisfaction at the mundane lives they lead in the midwestern suburbs. A TV weatherman (Jason Bateman) strikes up a friendship with a colleague, a professional sign-language interpreter (David Harbour) only to begin sleeping with his wife (Linda Cardellini).

When an elaborate scheme involving a hookup app and a life insurance policy ends in a murder, two investigators—played by Joy Sunday and Richard Jenkins—piece together the puzzle. While I’ve admitted in my recaps that the investigative angle is not my favorite part of the show, the mystery surrounding the true culprit and what their motives were had me hooked from the jump. So now that it’s over, what’s actually next for DTF St. Louis?

The bad news is that the show has always been a miniseries from the get-go. No one went into the series believing a second season was possible, let alone plausible. The good news is that the show’s creator, Steve Conrad, is open to the possibility of more. Though it likely won’t involve these same exact characters, there are surely other spicy murder cases to be solved.

Here’s everything we know so far about the future of DTF St. Louis.

Is DTF St. Louis Renewed for Season 2?

As of now, no. DTF St. Louis is not renewed for season 2. It is unlikely to be renewed at all, given its intended vision to be a one-off miniseries.

However, this doesn’t rule out a second season in an anthology format. In an interview with GQ, Conrad was asked if he would be interested in returning to the “world” of DTF St. Louis. The executive producer brought up another popular HBO series as a potential model to follow: The White Lotus. “It’s similar themes and a different setting,” Conrad said. “A DTF anthology would be sex and violence, and if you had to pick two things as a writer to be restricted to, sex and violence are pretty good. There’s extended possibilities and infinite results, so I could do it.”

However, we can rule out Conrad’s next project involving a weatherman. In a separate interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Conrad was questioned about his recurring motif of TV meteorology, as his screenplay for the 2005 film The Weather Man also centered on, well, a television weatherman. “You know, I’m looking for something to do next. And something came my way where coincidentally the guy used to be a weather man,” he said. “I thought, ‘I can’t do it three times.’ ”

The streaming era has seen a handful of one-season shows get extended life, like Beef, Good Omens, The Flight Attendant, and Shōgun. Maybe there’s still some gas in the tank for DTF St. Louis. But if not, we’ve had a hell of a time.
