Heading off on a camping excursion this summer? Choose your kit wisely. Your choice of camping setup can be the difference between an invigorating back-to-nature experience and an uncomfortable endurance exercise. Trust me — I’ve been on multiple camping trips every year, for most of my life, and I’ve spent time at both ends of that spectrum.
Below, I’ve rounded up the kit I’d recommend for a comfortable, enjoyable camping excursion: reliable tents, cosy sleeping bags, comfy mats and effective lighting. I spent two years testing outdoors kit, and I’ve included some of my favorite brands and products in the mix.
A quick browse online will tell you that you can spend any amount of money on camping gear. For most of my selections below, I’ve focused on mid-range options. They don’t cost the earth, but are still good enough quality that they’ll see you through multiple trips, and won’t let you down by falling apart, breaking, or leaking after one night.
These picks are for your average, casual camping trip — they aren’t specialized for hardcore excursions, nor are they luxurious, bulky picks for glampers (although if home comforts are what you’re after, I have a separate glamping collection that you should check out). I have, however, thrown in a few more off-grid options for fun — the Lifestraw that lets you safely drink from any water source, and a power station with solar panels to keep your gadgets charged when you’re without electricity. Happy camping!
