After an encouraging rookie season, New Orleans Saints running back Devin Neal enters his sophomore season facing a much different situation in the backfield.

New Orleans made the splash free agent signing of Travis Etienne during the offseason, while Alvin Kamara is expected to return for at least another season. As a result, Neal is unlikely to see a major increase in touches this season.

However, that isn’t necessarily a negative thing. Instead of being relied upon as a primary contributor, Neal can continue developing behind two accomplished veterans.

The Saints will also need depth over the course of a 17-game season. Injuries happen, workloads fluctuate and running backs are often called upon when least expected. Neal’s ability to stay prepared could determine how much of a role he earns when opportunities arise.

More than anything, this season should be about growth for Neal.

The Saints don’t need Neal to lead the backfield or carry a heavy workload. They need him to continue reining his overall game while learning from veterans who have found success at the NFL level.

While his numbers may not jump significantly in 2026, if Neal shows development and takes advantage of his opportunities, the season could still be an important step forward in his young career.
