Peter Alexander is leaving NBC News after many years as the White House correspondent and co-anchor of the Saturday broadcast on the Today show. “I’ve had the most incredible experience over 22 years with NBC News, from Baghdad to Banda Aceh to Burbank to Beijing. It’s hard to believe I’ve been a part of the NBC family for longer than I’ve had my own family,” he began in the March 28 broadcast. “Because I live in Washington, it is also a trek. I’ve been away from my home for 80 nights in the last seven months. More than 220 Friday nights away from my family in the last seven years. So in this limited window before my daughters lose interest in hanging out with me, it’s already happened quick. I’m eager to carve out a better balance between my personal and professional lives.”
His Today show colleagues supported his decision. “A great colleague, a better friend. We love you, Peter ❤️” Savannah Guthrie commented online. “What a career Peter! Much to celebrate and be proud of. So happy I had the chance to work with you and learn from you. Wishing you the best in this next chapter! 👏👏👏” NBC News daily anchor Vicky Nguyen added.
One of Alexander’s most memorable moments as the NBC White House correspondent was in 2020, when he asked President Trump, “What do you say to Americans who are scared?” at the beginning of the COVID pandemic. Trump replied, “I say that you are a terrible reporter, that’s what I say. I think it’s a very nasty question. I think it’s a very bad signal that you are putting out to the American people. They’re looking for answers and they’re looking for hope. And you’re doing sensationalism.”
